DESERT DYNAMO
Range Rover Electric Blazes a Trail in Extreme Heat
Range Rover is pushing the boundaries of electric luxury SUVs with its first all-electric model undergoing rigorous hot-weather testing. In the deserts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where temperatures soar above 50°C, Range Rover Electric prototypes are proving their mettle, tackling harsh conditions to ensure supreme performance and reliability.
UNYIELDING PERFORMANCE IN EXTREME HEAT
The UAE’s unforgiving desert landscape serves as the testing ground for the Range Rover Electric, pushing the vehicle’s capabilities to the limit. The testing focuses on vehicle performance and efficiency, particularly the innovative thermal management system that maintains optimal temperature control. This system ensures that the cabin and battery remain cool, even in extreme heat and humidity.
Thomas Müller, Executive Director of Product Engineering, highlighted the challenges of testing in such an environment: “A hot climate is one of the most challenging for any battery electric vehicle because of the need to cool the cabin and optimise battery performance simultaneously. The additional challenge of driving on sand requires controlled low-speed torque, so our specially developed traction control and thermal management systems work in harmony to ensure power delivery is unaffected.”
INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS FOR SEAMLESS DRIVING
The Range Rover Electric’s new Intelligent Trement system is a key feature that provides improved traction control. This system reduces the torque reaction time at each wheel to as little as 1 millisecond, offering superior handling on fine sand and other challenging terrains. This advanced technology ensures that the Range Rover Electric matches, and in some cases exceeds, the performance of its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts.
The electric SUV’s well-balanced weight distribution and sophisticated suspension system maintain stability and control, delivering a smooth and composed drive even on uneven dune formations. The robust testing in the UAE includes climbing the 300ft “Big Red” dune in Sharjah’s Al Badayer desert, a feat that the Range Rover Electric completed multiple times without any loss of performance.
A LEGACY OF INNOVATION AND LUXURY
Building on more than 50 years of pioneering innovations, the Range Rover Electric continues the brand’s tradition of delivering elegance and capability. This testing cycle affirms Range Rover’s commitment to maintaining its “go anywhere” reputation into the electric era. The vehicle’s advanced terrain response system and intelligent electric drive ensure a seamless transition from urban environments to challenging off-road conditions.
As preparations continue, Range Rover Electric is poised to redefine luxury SUVs, combining unparalleled comfort with cutting-edge technology. Client reservations for the Range Rover Electric will open in 2025, heralding a new era of electric luxury and performance.
