LEXUS LX 700h

Lexus has unveiled the LX 700h, marking a significant evolution in its flagship SUV lineup by introducing a hybrid powertrain. This move aligns with the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, offering local buyers luxury, performance, and environmental consciousness.

It is rare for Toyota South Africa and its luxury affiliate Lexus to introduce a new vehicle merely at a showing instead of a driving event. In such rarified cases, it is usually the case that the vehicle is so exclusive and so particular in its focus that there are simply not enough units available to drive, as was the case when Lexus unveiled its luxo-SUV in Sandton in March, where they showcased the LX 700h’s advanced technology, refined craftsmanship, and impressive capabilities. Our driving impressions will follow once we’ve had the chance to sample the car.

At the heart of the LX 700h is a 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo hybridised petrol engine, delivering an impressive 341 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque. This makes it the most potent LX model to date. The hybrid system integrates a motor generator with a clutch between the engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission, ensuring seamless power delivery and maintaining full-time four-wheel drive capabilities. The LX 500d variants offer 225 kW for those preferring diesel, providing robust performance across various terrains.

MODEL GRADEWALK

The LX 700h is available in three distinct variants, each catering to a different type of customer. The new adventure-focused Overtrail model is designed for off-road enthusiasts. It features front and rear differential locks, all-terrain tyres on 18” wheels, and a distinctive “Moon Desert” exterior colour. Inside, the Overtrail theme continues with a monolithic colour scheme complemented by ash burl black ornamentation, creating a refined yet rugged ambience.

The F SPORT variant brings dynamic styling elements for a sportier aesthetic, including an exclusive black mesh spindle grille, 22″ aluminium wheels, and F SPORT-specific interior appointments such as dimpled leather seats. These enhancements give the LX 700h a more aggressive road presence while maintaining the luxurious appeal expected from Lexus.

The VIP model is at the top of the range, elevating luxury to an entirely new level. The rear cabin is transformed into a first-class experience, with NASA-inspired reclining captain’s chairs featuring ottomans, contoured headrests, and massaging functions. Every element is designed to provide the utmost comfort, making the VIP model ideal for those who prioritise rear-seat luxury.

SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY

Lexus has equipped the LX 700h with the latest Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+), incorporating advanced driver-assist technologies to enhance safety for both occupants and pedestrians. Features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and pre-collision warning work together to provide a safer and more confident driving experience. Additionally, the vehicle features a 12.3″ full LCD meter, offering customisable displays to keep drivers informed and focused.

OFF-ROAD CAPABILITIES

Despite its hybrid underpinnings, the LX 700h retains its legendary off-road capability. The hybrid system is engineered to withstand challenging conditions, with a waterproof structure encasing the main battery in a sealed tray. This prevents water ingress during deep water crossings, allowing the LX 700h to maintain a fording capability of up to 700 mm, comparable to traditional combustion-engine vehicles. If water does enter the tray, sensors detect its presence and alert the driver, ensuring safety during off-road adventures.

An innovative feature of the LX 700h is its waterproof AC inverter, located beneath the centre console. This inverter provides an external power supply of up to 1,500 W, allowing users to power various devices or serve as an emergency power source. This enhances the vehicle’s practicality for outdoor activities and remote travel.

LAST WORD

The introduction of the LX 700h signifies Lexus’s dedication to blending luxury with sustainability. By offering a hybrid powertrain without compromising performance or comfort, Lexus offers South African consumers a compelling option in the luxury SUV market.
