When the last rays of gold kiss the skyline and the sunset seduces the shoreline, the world begins to slow. It is in this fleeting window – between dusk and nightfall – that the Range Rover Velar comes into its own: quietly, confidently, and with a presence that exudes sophistication and prowess.
The Range Rover Velar, with its svelte, coupé-like silhouette and dramatic black exterior pack, evokes a cinematic presence – framed like a leading character in a twilight escape. Subtle LED lighting and animated directional indicators give the evening a theatrical start, while its 20″ Satin Dark Grey wheels leave it poised in a script-ready stance.
LUXURY IN EVERY DETAIL
At a quiet overlook, with the engine off, the Velar maintains its luxurious composure. Heated and cooled seats, ambient lighting, and a crystal-clear Meridian sound system set the tone, while the head-up display projects only the essentials – speed, navigation, and a subtle reminder of the world-class experience unfolding inside.
Slipping behind the leather steering wheel with a moonlight bezel, I was cocooned in an ebony-grained leather interior – minimalistic yet opulent, technical yet tactile. The black brushed aluminium finishes glinted in the fading light, and the sliding panoramic roof overhead slowly revealed the sky peppered with stars.
EFFORTLESS ELECTRIC
More than its hauntingly beautiful design, what sets the Velar apart is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that goes beyond a nod to sustainability; it transforms the driving experience.
I set off in EV mode, relishing the near-silent acceleration as the car glided effortlessly through narrow lanes and near slumbering suburbs. There’s an eerie calm that comes with electric-only driving. This serenity heightens your awareness of the world around you: the ocean’s hush, the gentle rustle of leaves as a breeze caresses tree-lined sidewalks, even the sound of your own breath.
With a real-world electric range of up to 49 km, the electric-only experience is not merely a technical afterthought – it is a meaningful part of the journey.
POWER MEETS POISE
Switching to hybrid mode, the Velar’s intelligent powertrain began a seamless exchange between electric and petrol power. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged Ingenium engine, combined with the electric motor, with outputs of 297 kW and 640 Nm, delivers an impressive zero to 100 km/h sprint time of just 5.4 seconds. That’s sports car territory, yet it never once felt aggressive. The 8-speed automatic transmission adds a sense of composure, making for a velvet-smooth ride, thanks to Adaptive Dynamics and coil suspension – emphasising refinement over raw aggression.
Heading off-road into mild terrain to test its mettle, the Velar doesn’t flinch in the face of sand or dirt. Despite its elegance, it still carries the DNA of a genuine Range Rover. With Terrain Response, hill-descent control, and wade sensing up to 530 mm, it proved more than capable.
SIMPLIFIED CHARGING
Convenience matches capability when it comes to charging. The Velar PHEV takes just 30 minutes to reach 80% charge using a public DC charger, making it ideal for a quick coffee stop. At home, a 7kW wall box delivers a full charge in 2.5 hours. There is also the slow-and-steady three-pin option, ideal for overnight home charging, though Land Rover sensibly advises against using extension cables, even in a pinch.
LAST WORD
As twilight faded and dawn brushed the sky in soft pastels, the Velar glided back into the city. The flush, deployable door handles retracted with elegance, the tailgate closed with a whisper. Thanks to a clever combination of regenerative braking and hybrid efficiency, distance is no feat for the fuel gauge. With official figures showing just 2.2 l/100km and 51 g/km CO2 emissions, the Velar delivers near-miraculous efficiency for a luxury SUV of its calibre.
