A HYBRID TITAN ARRIVES

THE NEW BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT

On the rare occasion of the unveiling of a new Bentley, it’s all hands on deck in the South African motoring media fraternity. That was certainly the case when Bentley Johannesburg hosted the local debut of its latest electrified masterpiece last month. Naturally, Driven was there to witness the Flying Spur Hybrid’s quiet arrival – and in typical Bentley fashion, it made an impression that was anything but understated.

While luxury marques the world over have been pivoting toward electrification, few do so with the quiet confidence and elegance of Bentley. And the new Flying Spur Hybrid, now available in South Africa, is perhaps the most refined example yet of the brand’s “Beyond100” strategy – Bentley’s commitment to becoming a fully electric carmaker by 2030.

Since its debut in 2003, the Bentley Continental GT has stood as a grand tourer icon, defined by its seamless blend of power, opulence, and handcrafted elegance. Now in its fourth generation, Bentley’s flagship coupe arrives with a bold new face, an innovative Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain, and a sharper-than-ever driving experience. It’s a Continental that looks firmly ahead, without forgetting where it came from.

A DESIGN ROOTED IN HERITAGE

While many brands chase design trends, Bentley continues to sculpt its cars from a legacy of excellence. The new Continental GT still carries echoes of the legendary 1952 R-Type Continental – notably in its powerful haunches, sloping roofline, and that endlessly long bonnet. But make no mistake, this GT is built for tomorrow. Its stance is taut and muscular, with the kind of purposeful poise that looks just as comfortable storming autobahns as it does parked outside the One&Only.

The most significant design shift is upfront. For the first time in two decades, Bentley has moved away from the familiar twin round headlamps, replacing them with single elliptical LED clusters, pierced by an “eyebrow” light bar. Dubbed the “Focused Eye,” this new signature lighting gives the GT a dramatic, almost feline stare. Combined with a new grille and aggressive front apron on the Speed variant, the Continental’s face is more assertive than ever.

At the rear, a larger integrated spoiler, simplified bumper, and protruding taillights give the car a wider, cleaner look. The tail lamps themselves feature a deep 3D diamond design, and when lit, the glowing tips resemble molten lava – a subtle nod to the GT’s raw power. Finishing touches include new 22-inch directional wheels with a “claw” design motif, echoing the tiger-like theme of poised aggression.

MASTERCLASS IN MODERN CRAFTSMANSHIP

Bentley’s interiors have long set the benchmark for luxury, and the new Continental GT continues the tradition with just enough evolution to keep things fresh. The cabin remains a haven of handcrafted materials, diamond-quilted leather, knurled metal, and seamless digital integration – but this time, it has a more contemporary edge.

New trim options, including darker chrome accents, bring a moodier tone for those wanting something less traditional. Yet the soul of the Bentley cabin – that exquisite sense of occasion – remains untouched. From the rotating central display to the precision stitching that would put Savile Row to shame, every detail serves to elevate the experience.

Personalisation is a key part of the Continental GT’s appeal, and with Bentley’s vast options catalogue, no two cabins need ever be the same. Whether your taste leans toward bold contrast stitching or restrained elegance, the GT delivers a truly bespoke experience.

ULTRA PERFORMANCE MEETS ELECTRIC INTELLIGENCE

At the heart of the new GT lies Bentley’s most advanced powertrain to date – the Ultra Performance Hybrid. A reworked 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is paired with a 141 kW electric motor, producing a combined 582 kW and over 1,000 Nm of torque. It’s the most powerful road-going Bentley ever built, and it delivers its performance with both brutal force and astonishing refinement.

Zero to 100 km/h comes up in just 3.2 seconds, while top speed reaches 335 km/h. But the real revelation is how this car moves. The electric motor, integrated into the transmission, delivers torque seamlessly during take-off and gear shifts, eliminating lag and amplifying smoothness. It also allows for near-silent, electric-only cruising at speeds of up to 160 km/h, with a claimed range of 80 km on battery power alone.

And for those longer trips, a clever “charge mode” lets the V8 top up the battery on the move, meaning you’re never caught short of electrons when you need them. Recharging from the wall takes under three hours, thanks to the new 25.9 kWh battery with 95% usable capacity, cleverly positioned behind the rear axle for better weight balance.

A CHASSIS THAT FLATTERS AND THRILLS

Straight-line speed is one thing, but grand touring demands a more nuanced approach to dynamics – and this is where the Continental GT truly shines. The Bentley Performance Active Chassis is a clever cocktail of technologies: all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, torque vectoring, an electronic limited-slip differential, and Bentley Dynamic Ride – the brand’s anti-roll tech.

New dual-valve adaptive dampers enable the GT to switch personalities on demand, offering plush, pillowy comfort one moment and sharp, corner-carving performance the next. A revised ESC setup also contributes to sharper handling and better body control in spirited driving.

It’s all part of what makes the Continental such a compelling all-rounder. Whether you’re carving through Franschhoek Pass or eating up long highway kilometres, the GT adapts effortlessly – always comfortable, always composed, and always deeply engaging.

GRAND TOURER REDEFINED

Priced from R6,534,000 (including Bentley’s three-year/100,000 km Driveplan), the new Continental GT is far more than a facelift. It’s a complete reinvention that honours Bentley’s heritage while confidently embracing the demands of a modern, electrified future.

From its assertive new design to its class-leading hybrid powertrain and sublime craftsmanship, this fourth-generation GT doesn’t just compete – it reclaims its place at the top of the luxury grand touring hierarchy. It is a car built not just to impress, but to inspire.

LAST WORD

In a world increasingly defined by compromise, the new Continental GT is a rare thing: a car that offers it all. Electrified yet emotional, sophisticated yet soulful, it delivers the kind of experience that reminds us why we love to drive. And for those fortunate enough to claim one, it promises every journey will be as memorable as the destination.
