A NEW WAY TO SEE THE CAR

BMW Panoramic iDrive

For all the attention usually given to electric motors, battery capacity and charging speeds, one of the most significant innovations in the Neue Klasse BMW iX3 is something far less mechanical. It is the way the driver interacts with the car.

BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive represents perhaps the biggest change to its human/vehicle interface since the original iDrive arrived in 2001. At its centre is BMW Panoramic Vision, a display strip stretching almost from A-pillar to A-pillar across the lower section of the windscreen.

This is where the system becomes particularly clever. Rather than adding yet another large screen to the dashboard, BMW has moved information into the driver’s natural field of vision. Essential driving information sits directly ahead of the driver, while the rest of the Panoramic Vision display can be configured through the central touchscreen. The result is a much more integrated relationship between the driver, the car, and the information the vehicle provides.

INFO WHERE YOU NEED IT

For decades, the dashboard has been built around the same basic principle: instruments directly in front of the driver, secondary information in the centre and everything else distributed around the cabin. Digital technology allowed designers to rethink that arrangement, and BMW has finally taken a fairly radical step in doing so.

Panoramic Vision forms part of a four-element interface, working with the central display, multifunction steering wheel and optional 3D Head-Up Display. Each element has a specific role, while voice interaction through the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant offers another way to communicate with the car.

The important change is that BMW is beginning to treat the entire dashboard as an information environment rather than a collection of separate displays and controls. Panoramic Vision lets information appear across the driver’s field of view without requiring their attention to move down to a conventional instrument binnacle or across to the central screen.

That has implications beyond the iX3. As cars become increasingly software-defined, the quality of the human/vehicle interface will become as important as the hardware underneath it. A powerful electric drivetrain is impressive, but if interacting with the car remains distracting or unnecessarily complicated, the technology has missed part of the point.

With Panoramic iDrive, BMW has taken a significant step towards making the interface feel like part of the driving experience rather than something sitting between driver and vehicle.

The revolution here isn’t the screen size. It is where BMW has chosen to put the information.

PRO MAX MOVES THE GOALPOSTS

Apple has taken the familiar formula of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and pushed several key elements further with the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The biggest advances are found in its camera system, processing power and battery life.

The headline photographic upgrade is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera, which introduces variable aperture to an iPhone for the first time. Its six-blade mechanism can move between ƒ/1.48 and ƒ/4, letting the camera optimise light gathering and depth of field while giving photographers more manual control. New Pro Controls also let you adjust aperture, shutter speed, and white balance.

Performance comes from Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, supported by a next-generation vapour chamber designed to improve sustained performance, particularly during demanding applications and AI processing. The Dynamic Island is smaller too, creating slightly more usable display space.

Battery life has received a particularly useful boost. Apple quotes up to 45 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, compared with 37 hours for its predecessor, while faster charging adds further convenience.

The result is a familiar device with meaningful advances in the areas that matter most in everyday use. The iPhone 18 Pro Max doesn’t reinvent Apple’s flagship formula, but it raises the ceiling for camera capability, processing power and endurance, keeping the Pro Max firmly at the top of Apple’s smartphone range.
