Changan is steadily expanding its South African presence with models including the Hunter K50 REEV, Hunter Diesel, Deepal S07 and CS75 Pro, to name a few. Understanding where these vehicles come from creates a valuable connection between product and process, offering a clearer understanding of the company behind the badge.
A BRAND WITH DEEP ROOTS
Although Changan is still establishing itself in South Africa, its story stretches back more than 160 years. Founded in 1862 as a military supply workshop, the company produced machinery and industrial equipment before entering the automotive industry in 1959 with the Changjiang Type 46, its first locally developed vehicle.
A defining moment came in 1984 through a partnership with Suzuki, introducing modern engineering, manufacturing techniques and quality control systems that helped shape Changan into a competitive passenger vehicle manufacturer. Today, it has grown into one of China’s largest automotive groups, supported by global research and development centres, intelligent manufacturing facilities and an expanding international footprint.
That journey is reflected in its local line-up. The Hunter K50 REEV introduces range-extender electric technology, the Hunter Diesel caters for traditional workhorse buyers, and the all-electric Deepal S07 showcases the brand’s EV ambitions. At the same time, the CS75 Pro strengthens its SUV offering.
PRECISION AT EVERY STAGE
Walking into Changan’s Liangjiang Digital Intelligent Factory immediately changes perceptions of modern vehicle production.
The first impression is precision. Hundreds of robots weld, lift and position body structures with remarkable accuracy, while each production stage flows seamlessly into the next. Designed around flexibility, the facility builds petrol, hybrid and range-extender vehicles on the same production lines, allowing Changan to adapt quickly to changing market demand.
More than 500 welding robots produce a finished body shell every 55 seconds, while laser inspection systems continuously monitor critical measurement points to ensure consistent quality. It is manufacturing on a scale few consumers ever witness, yet one that directly influences the refinement and build quality experienced on the road.
A FACTORY BUILT FOR TOMORROW
Automation extends well beyond welding. The stamping workshop produces millions of components annually using high-speed steel and aluminium production lines. At the same time, more than 700 intelligent robots work alongside autonomous guided vehicles that move components efficiently across the factory. Every vehicle receives a unique digital identity, allowing complete quality traceability throughout its production life.
Supporting the operation is a 5G intelligent manufacturing platform that monitors production, predicts maintenance requirements and provides engineers with real-time information. Yet despite the advanced technology, people remain at the centre of every process, with engineers and technicians overseeing every stage of production.
LOOKING AHEAD
Any visit to the Changan headquarters will also offer a glimpse of Changan’s future. Beyond the factory floor, vehicles expected to strengthen the South African line-up over the coming years include the Uni-S HEV, CS75 Plus HEV, Nevo Q05 electric crossover, the compact Lumin city EV, and the next-generation Hunter K70 REEV.
Together, they demonstrate a strategy built around choice. Rather than committing to a single powertrain, Changan continues developing petrol, hybrid, range-extender and fully electric vehicles, an approach that suits the diverse needs of the South African market.

It is hard not to be impressed by the automation and engineering at a vehicle plant. More than that, however, it is about understanding how Changan’s vehicles are conceived, engineered and built, while reinforcing the company’s commitment to quality, innovation and long-term growth.
