The arrival of the Changan Uni-S introduces a product that is difficult to neatly place into a single category. It may sit at a B-SUV price point, but in terms of size, specification and overall execution, it operates comfortably in C-segment territory. That disconnect between price and perceived class is central to its appeal.
The Changan Uni-S line-up is refreshingly straightforward, with three derivatives offered locally: CS, CL and CE. All share the same mechanical package, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 138 kW and 300 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels.
The CS, however, is where the value story begins to take shape. Even at entry level, the spec sheet reads like something positioned a rung higher. You get a 12.8” infotainment system paired with a 10.25” digital instrument cluster, smartphone connectivity, ventilated front seats, climate control and a full suite of safety systems.
What stands out most is the inclusion of a 540-degree camera system, which extends beyond the usual surround-view setup to provide a near-complete visual of the car’s surroundings. In practice, it makes low-speed manoeuvring and tight parking situations almost effortless. It is one of those features that feels excessive on paper, yet quickly becomes genuinely useful in everyday driving.
PARKING PARTY TRICK
Step up to the CL, and the Uni-S takes a noticeable leap in both perceived quality and technology. The cabin gains microfibre leather upholstery and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, while the addition of adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and traffic sign recognition introduces a comprehensive layer of driver assistance.
It is at this level that the Uni-S begins to feel particularly well judged. The added safety and convenience features align with what buyers in this segment increasingly expect, without pushing the price into uncomfortable territory.
At the top of the range sits the CE, which rounds out the package with a focus on convenience and refinement. Larger 19” alloy wheels, an electric panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, an upgraded audio system and electric adjustment for both front seats all feature here.
This is also where the Uni-S introduces its more advanced parking functionality. Beyond the already impressive camera system, the CE adds automated parking assist, allowing the vehicle to steer itself into suitable spaces with minimal driver input. It is a feature that still feels novel at this price point and reinforces the Uni-S’s focus on accessible technology.

ALL ABOUT THE DRIVE
Inside, the Uni-S presents a cabin that feels more resolved than expected. The design is clean and modern, with a strong emphasis on digital interfaces, yet it avoids becoming overly complicated. Material quality is competitive, and consistent execution suggests careful attention to detail.
Space is another strong point. The proportions that give it that C-segment presence outside translate into a practical and accommodating interior, with usable rear-seat space and a 475-litre boot that suits family use.
There are, however, a few quirks. The infotainment system may require some familiarisation, particularly when navigating deeper menus. It is not immediately intuitive in every instance, although it improves with use. Then there is the audible character under acceleration. A distinct whooshing note makes itself known when pressing on, which feels like something that could have been better resolved.
Out on the road, though, the Uni-S settles into its own. The chassis delivers a composed and balanced drive, with a level of comfort that suits local conditions well. It absorbs imperfections without losing its sense of control, and there is an underlying solidity that builds confidence over distance.
The engine, meanwhile, delivers its outputs in a way that feels usable rather than strained. With 138 kW and 300 Nm available, performance is more than adequate for daily driving, with enough mid-range strength to handle overtaking without hesitation. The overall delivery is surefooted and consistent, reinforcing the impression of a well-rounded package.

LAST WORD
What ultimately defines the Uni-S is not a single headline feature, but how effectively everything has been brought together. It offers the size and presence of a larger SUV, a strong level of standard specification across all derivatives, and technology that feels current without being inaccessible.
It also challenges a common assumption. Initial scepticism around the brand gives way quickly once you spend time with the product. The Uni-S feels considered, well executed and aligned with what the segment demands.
For South African buyers, it represents a compelling alternative. Not because it tries to reinvent the segment, but because it quietly recalibrates expectations of what should be included at this price point.
