MCQUEEN-COOL FORD MUSTANG BULLITT COMING TO SA

So, this is probably as good as it can get for any-would-be performance nameplate: add a legendary name – a Bullitt autograph in this instance – stick to roughly the same recipe that makes a sportscar just that and sell it in limited numbers.

In case you did not get the ‘Bullitt’ reference, we are speaking, of course, of the limited-run Ford Mustang Bullitt that is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in 2019.

It’s also not just an add-go-faster-aesthetic model since the ‘Stang salutes the original Mustang GT Fastback that was used in the 1968 petrol-pumping flick Bullitt at the hands of Steve McQueen – or his stunt double at least.

MOVES LIKE BULLITT

The latest Mustang rendition is powered by a tweaked 5.0-litre V8 engine that produces 358 kW and 569 Nm of torque for McQueen-like antics, while the needle will continue climbing all the way to 262 km/h.

According to Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer, there are certain things a Bullitt absolutely must have: “It has to have the right attitude and it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT. More than anything, it has to be badass.”

LOOKING THE PART OF BULLITT

On the aesthetic front, this special Mustang will be available in a Dark Highland Green exterior paint that is similar to that used in the 1968 thriller, or a Shadow Black hue. It also features subtle chrome detailing, five-spoke 19” wheels and red Brembo brake callipers.

The interior is finished in leather with green accent stitching on the facia, door panels, centre console and the Recaro seats. Furthermore, it also comes with a white cue ball living atop the gear shifter that pays further homage to the original.

This new Bullitt, says Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer, is his favourite of the Mustang family.
“With zero stripes, spoilers or badges, it doesn’t need to shout. It’s just cool, like Steve McQueen.”

The special Mustang will arrive in SA in very limited numbers during the course of 2019. Ford, however, has not revealed any details on pricing.
