FOTON TUNLAND V SERIES

Mzansi loves its bakkies. It is a market built on loyalty, pride, and a genuine appreciation for machines that work hard during the week and clean up nicely for the weekend. It is also a market that does not accept mediocrity.

A brand wanting a slice of the South African bakkie market has to be confident about it, and show character and capability. So, when Foton recently stepped forward with the all-new Tunland V Series with their big grilles and hints of American attitude, they were anything but shy.

Foton chose its flagship Silverlakes dealership in Pretoria to introduce the V Series, and it felt like the right place for a bakkie that wants to be taken seriously. The setup was clean, the welcome warm, and the atmosphere had that quiet confidence that tells you the brand believes in what they are about to show. After a quick briefing, we climbed into the convoy for a relaxed drive to Rosemary Hill, an ideal route that mixes traffic, open stretches, and light rural scenery, the perfect playground for a first impression.

GROWING WITH PURPOSE

Foton has been in South Africa for some time now, but the brand has spent the past few years strengthening its presence, improving its products, and showing real intent. The rollout of its first pre-production locally assembled model signalled a turning point. Local assembly shows commitment and says, “We believe in this market, we believe in its future, and we want to be a part of it.” With plans to expand to sixty dealerships across the country, Foton is clearly not here as a visitor.

RUGGED YET REFINED

At the core of both the Tunland V7 and V9 is a 2.0-litre AUCAN diesel engine, supported by a 48V mild-hybrid system. Power sits at 120 kW, with a strong 450 Nm of torque. On paper, it looks competitive. On the road, it feels better than the numbers suggest. The hybrid system smooths out acceleration and takes the harsh edge off low-speed shifts. The eight-speed ZF automatic transmission pairs beautifully with the engine, offering quiet, predictable gear changes that help maintain a relaxed driving rhythm.

The V7 is the workhorse of the family. With leaf spring rear suspension, it is built to carry loads, handle rougher environments, and take on farm or site work without blinking. The V9 steps into the more refined space. Its multi-link rear suspension brings a softer, more cushioned ride that instantly appeals to families, long-distance travellers, and anyone who wants bakkie practicality without sacrificing comfort. Both models share a double wishbone front suspension setup, which helps keep the front end planted and confident.

Capability is a strong talking point. The V Series offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes, a one-tonne load rating, 240 mm ground clearance, and a generous load area.

INSIDE THE CABIN

The big Fotons boast a modern interior layout with big screens, generous space, and a design that keeps the driver at the centre of the experience. The 14.6″ infotainment system dominates the dashboard and is supported by a fully digital instrument cluster that is easy to read, customisable, and neatly integrated. Dual zone climate control, wireless charging, USB ports, and rear air vents add to the convenience.

The seats are wrapped in high-grade imitation leather, and the driver receives a 10-way-adjustable electric seat with lumbar support. It is a thoughtful touch, especially for long-distance highway driving. The cabin is filled with practical storage from the armrest box to the side pockets and centre compartments. Everything feels simple, clean, and focused on comfort.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The short drive to Rosemary Hill exposed the real personality of the Tunland V Series. That 450 Nm of torque makes a noticeable difference. The bakkie gets moving with minimal effort and settles into a steady cruising rhythm without raising its voice. The hybrid assistance smooths out the initial pull away, especially in slow traffic, making the drive feel cleaner and more controlled.

The eight-speed ZF gearbox deserves credit. It shifts early when you want economy and holds gears naturally when you need to overtake or climb. It never feels confused or hesitant. The steering is light but stable, providing a reassuring feel when managing the vehicle’s size around tighter bends or busy intersections.

On the suspension side, the V7 shows its workhorse DNA with a firmer, more grounded ride, while the V9 is noticeably softer and more composed. Cabin insulation is impressive, keeping wind and road noise low and enhancing the calm inside.

SAFETY AND TECH

The safety offering in the V Series is generous for this segment. Depending on trim, you get a 360-degree HD surround view, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, pedestrian protection, tyre pressure monitoring, and side curtain airbags. Features like keyless entry, remote window control, hydraulic slow-drop tailgate, a built-in tailgate step, and a 220V power socket make everyday usability easier.

It is clear that Foton wanted to offer more than the basics, and the tech list proves it. The V Series competes well with established rivals by giving drivers both safety and convenience in one package.

BUILT FOR AFRICA

Local assembly brings more than pride. It brings trust. It means parts availability, technician training, and a long-term promise to support the customer. The V Series is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, a 5-year/75,000 km service plan, and five years of roadside assistance. That is a strong ownership package for a brand growing its name in South Africa.

LAST WORD

The Foton Tunland V Series arrives with presence, confidence, and a design that will at least pique South Africans’ curiosity. The V7 speaks directly to hardworking individuals who want strength, durability, and everyday reliability. The V9 brings refinement, comfort, and modern appeal while still offering serious capability. Both deliver a calm, stable driving experience supported by strong torque, a smooth gearbox, and practical features that suit our lifestyle.

Pricing starts at R689,900 for the V7 4×2 and R765,900 for the V7 4×4. The V9 starts at R725,900 for the 4×2, with the top-spec 4×4 LTD sitting at R799,900. It is a competitive offering in a competitive segment, proving that Foton has been paying close attention to what South African buyers expect.
