GEELY E5

Geely Auto has officially entered the South African market with its E5 EM-i petrol-electric hybrid and E5 fully-electric SUVs. What could have been a routine launch instead unfolded as a calculated first step into a highly competitive market.

From the outset, Geely’s message at their first significant public engagement was clear. South Africa is central to Geely’s African expansion plan, and the launch underscored its significance. Hosted under the theme The Full Effect, the evening concentrated on substance rather than spectacle, with more than 200 guests engaging directly with the vehicles through static displays, technical walkarounds and detailed product briefings.

Two new energy SUVs mark Geely’s entry into the local market. The fully electric E5 and the plug-in hybrid E5 EM-i form the core of the brand’s rollout, offering buyers two distinct paths to electrified mobility. While the E5 EM-i appeals to those seeking reassurance about range through hybrid technology, attention now shifts to the all-electric E5, which is Geely’s most straightforward EV option for South Africa.

A FULLY ELECTRIC SUV

Positioned in the midsize SUV segment, the Geely E5 targets established nameplates such as the Ford Territory and Haval H6. Its proportions, specifications, and pricing suggest a product designed for families and professionals looking to transition to electric motoring without entering premium territory.

The E5 is available in two trims, Aspire and Apex. Both are equipped with a front-mounted electric motor delivering 160 kW and 320 Nm, enabling a claimed zero to 100 km/h acceleration in seven seconds. Rather than prioritising outright performance, the E5’s positioning emphasises smooth, quiet, and predictable delivery, ideal for everyday driving.

Energy is supplied by a 60.22 kWh battery. In the Aspire trim, the claimed driving range is up to 430 km, while the Apex offers a slightly lower range of 410 km due to additional equipment. Charging flexibility has been prioritised, with support for 11 kW AC charging enabling a full recharge in just over six hours. DC fast charging at up to 100 kW allows the battery to be replenished from 30 to 80% in approximately 20 minutes.

SPACE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SAFETY

Measuring 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height, the E5 fits comfortably into the family SUV category. The cabin layout prioritises space, clarity and technology, with a clean, modern design that avoids unnecessary complexity.

Standard equipment on the Aspire includes LED lighting all around, 18″ alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, an electric driver’s seat, and automatic climate control. Ventilated front seats are included, along with a 10.2″ digital instrument cluster and a 15.4″ central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay.

Safety and convenience features include ABS, hill assist, cruise control, parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera with a chassis view, providing a solid baseline specification.

The Apex builds on this with 19″ alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, intelligent high-beam headlights, and a head-up display. Driver assistance systems now include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-change assist, and emergency lane-keep assist. Additional comfort features include ambient lighting and massage seats, positioning the Apex as a more premium offering.

Speaking at the launch, Allen Yang, General Manager of Geely Auto South Africa, outlined the company’s broader

regional vision. He explained that South Africa will serve as Geely’s operational and commercial hub for Africa.

The emphasis is on long-term relevance rather than short-term volume. New energy vehicles are positioned as part of a connected, lifestyle-driven ownership experience, aligning with evolving buyer expectations around technology, sustainability and convenience.

FOUNDATION FOR OWNERSHIP

Established partners support Geely’s local rollout. Bidvest McCarthy and Supergroup will anchor the dealer network, while WesBank will provide financing solutions, and Rubicon will support the development of charging infrastructure. Buffalo will manage logistics and warehousing, and Key Alliance Group will deliver roadside assistance.

After-sales support will be managed through the Geely Care+ programme, supported by a 3,500 m2 parts warehouse that boasts a reported 96% parts fulfilment rate, including same-day delivery for urgent orders.

Pricing for the Geely E5 starts at R699,999 for the Aspire and R759,999 for the Apex. This includes a six-year or 150,000 km warranty, a six-year or 120,000 km service plan, five-year unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance, and an eight-year or 200,000 km battery warranty.

LAST WORD

Geely has entered South Africa with clarity and confidence. The E5 is positioned as a mainstream electric SUV, designed around space, technology and everyday usability rather than niche appeal.

Based on the evening launch, the product strategy is solid, pricing is competitive, and the after-sales support seems well thought out. The wider model roadmap further strengthens Geely’s long-term commitment to the market.

A full judgement, however, will be reserved until the vehicles are in our garage. Expect a full review of the Geely E5 in the February edition of Driven.
