GWM has expanded its local line-up with the launch of the all-new Ora 5, a compact crossover offered with petrol, hybrid and fully electric powertrains. Combining competitive pricing with generous specification, the newcomer is aimed squarely at one of South Africa’s most competitive market segments.
GWM has expanded its local line-up with the arrival of the Ora 5, a compact crossover that signals a fresh direction for the Chinese manufacturer. While the Ora 03 established the brand’s presence in South Africa as a quirky all-electric hatchback, the newcomer adopts a far broader approach, offering buyers a choice of petrol, hybrid and fully electric powertrains within a single model range.
It is a strategy that reflects the realities of the local market. While electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, many South Africans remain hesitant to make the leap. By allowing customers to choose the drivetrain that best suits their lifestyle and budget, GWM is casting a much wider net than before.
MULTI-PERSONALITY MODEL RANGE
The Ora 5 is available in six derivatives, split evenly across petrol, hybrid and battery-electric variants. Entry into the range comes in the form of the 1.5T Super Luxury, priced from R364,900, while the flagship BEV Ultra Luxury tops the line-up at R599,900.
Powering the petrol models is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 105 kW and 210 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Buyers seeking greater efficiency can opt for the hybrid, where the same turbocharged engine works alongside an electric motor to deliver a combined 164 kW and 476 Nm through GWM’s Dedicated Hybrid Transmission.
The fully electric Ora 5 employs a single electric motor producing 150 kW and 260 Nm, drawing energy from a 58.3 kWh battery pack. GWM claims a driving range of up to 520 km on the NEDC cycle, placing it among the more competitive offerings in its segment.

DESIGNED FOR THE MAINSTREAM
Although it retains subtle styling cues from the Ora 03, the new model moves away from the retro-inspired hatchback formula in favour of a more conventional crossover silhouette. The rounded lighting elements and clean body surfaces give it a contemporary appearance without venturing into the increasingly aggressive styling adopted by many rivals.
Inside, the cabin presents a similarly modern design, centred around dual digital displays and a minimalist dashboard layout. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across the range, along with wireless smartphone charging, a 360-degree camera system and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies. Depending on the chosen specification level, buyers can also expect powered front seats, a panoramic sunroof and additional comfort features.
Safety has also received considerable attention, with adaptive cruise control, lane centring assistance, autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring forming part of the extensive active safety package.
BROADENING THE APPEAL
The Ora 5 enters one of South Africa’s most competitive vehicle segments, where it faces established rivals such as the Toyota Corolla Cross, Haval Jolion, Chery Tiggo Cross, and Omoda C5. Rather than relying on a single standout feature, GWM appears to be positioning the newcomer on overall value, offering generous specification levels across the range while allowing buyers to select the powertrain that best matches their needs.
That flexibility may prove to be one of the Ora 5’s greatest strengths. Buyers who are not yet ready to embrace electrification can opt for the turbocharged petrol model, while those looking to reduce fuel consumption without charging infrastructure can choose the hybrid. For customers ready to make the transition to full electric mobility, the BEV completes the line-up without requiring a move into a different model altogether.

LAST WORD
With the Ora 5, GWM has transformed its electric-only offering into a versatile family of vehicles designed for a far broader audience. Competitive pricing, generous standard specification and the choice of three distinct powertrains give the newcomer a compelling proposition in an increasingly crowded crossover market. Whether South African buyers choose petrol, hybrid or electric, the Ora 5 demonstrates that GWM’s ambitions extend well beyond niche appeal, signalling the next step in the brand’s local growth strategy.
