MAKING MOVES

CHANGAN POWERED BY JAMEEL MOTORS

Sun City became the setting for the next chapter of Changan’s journey into South Africa, following the momentum that began earlier this year. What was then a brand preparing to reshape expectations has now taken physical form through an official national showcase of five new models. The warm resort atmosphere and the iconic Superbowl venue provided the ideal backdrop for a manufacturer stepping into the market with a product range built around its guiding philosophy of reliability and innovation.

For those who have followed the automotive industry closely, the Changan name may not be entirely unfamiliar. Launched (on paper) in October this year, a physical launch held at Sun City recently signalled a renewed, fully aligned chapter for the brand. Stronger global backing, a sharpened dealer network and a more deliberate product strategy gave this launch the feeling of a confident rollout rather than a tentative arrival.

At the event, five models stood lined up across the lawns, each one positioned for a distinct lifestyle and buyer profile. Instead of a scattered introduction, Changan presented an intentional lineup that reflected its understanding of the South African market. From entry-level sedans and SUVs to electrified mobility and hardworking double cabs, the brand demonstrated its readiness to meet diverse local needs.

ALSVIN

The Alsvin serves as Changan’s opening statement in South Africa. Positioned for first-time buyers and budget-conscious families, it proves that affordability and refinement can co-exist. The exterior is clean and modern, and the proportions give it a confident stance, while the cabin is straightforward but more polished than expected at this price point.

Features such as a sunroof on the 1.5L Auto, a reverse camera, Bluetooth, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and generous storage areas all contribute to a stronger value proposition. The 1.4L manual is priced at R238,000 and the 1.5L Auto at R271,200, directly competing with the likes of the Honda Amaze and Suzuki Dzire.

On the short drive loops around Sun City, the Alsvin felt settled. The 1.5L engine delivered smooth power, and the automatic felt surprisingly composed. Although it’s not engineered for performance, it offers predictability, economy, and ease of use.

CS75 PRO

The CS75 Pro quickly became a crowd favourite. Its styling alone creates a strong first impression, with a dynamic grille, sharp LED lighting and body lines that make it look quite premium. The cabin elevates this further with quality materials, a large infotainment layout, and comfortable seating. There is also a seven-seater option in the line-up.

Powered by the 1.5L Blue Whale turbo engine with 138 kW and 300 Nm, paired with a seven-speed DCT, the CS75 Pro delivers smooth acceleration and impressive mid-range response. Ride quality on our sample route seemed well adjusted, with enough firmness for stability while carefully dealing with uneven surfaces. Families will appreciate the flexible seating, the spacious boot, and the numerous storage solutions throughout the cabin.

Pricing starts at R429,900 for the five-seater, with the seven-seater arriving at R449,900. Higher spec CE models are priced at R474,900 and R499,900. In a highly competitive segment, where the Toyota Corolla Cross reigns supreme, the CS75 Pro holds its own through refinement, features, and value.

HUNTER TURBODIESEL

The Hunter double cab arrives (according to Changan) with the toughness that South African buyers expect from a working bakkie. The 2.0L turbo diesel engine provides a solid foundation for both commercial and lifestyle use. The 2WD manual is priced at R449,900 and the 4WD automatic at R569,900.

Changan understands that local customers prioritise durability, space and towing confidence. The Hunter feels grounded on the road, with a robust suspension layout and a commanding driving position. The design carries presence without unnecessary flair, and the cabin is practical, functional, and easy to live with. It is an honest, straightforward double cab built for real-life demands.

HUNTER K50 REEV

One of the standout moments of the launch was the introduction of the Hunter K50 REEV, a range-extended electric double cab. South Africa is warming up to electric mobility, but an electric forward bakkie is a bold proposition. With an estimated price of R799,900, the Hunter REEV brings EV efficiency to a familiar double-cab format, offering an option for buyers who want to transition to electric motoring without abandoning traditional utility. Its presence at the launch hints at the direction Changan sees ahead for the segment.

DEEPAL S07

The Deepal S07 serves as Changan’s flagship EV for South Africa. Its coupe-inspired lines, clean surfaces and futuristic interior place it firmly in the premium EV space without reaching luxury pricing. With an introductory price of R995,900, the S07 positions itself strategically. The Deepal S07’s 160 kW and 320 Nm of torque complement its refined, quiet drive, while 560 km of stated range and sharp looks will help elevate Changan’s brand identity within the EV landscape.

The Sun City showcase was more than a reveal of pricing and specifications. It was an expression of intent. The dealer network is expanding; the warranty is set at five years or 150,000 km, and each model has been tuned for local roads and conditions. South African buyers are increasingly open to Chinese manufacturers, and Changan’s mix of competitive pricing, strong specifications, and solid engineering gives the brand a meaningful entry point.

The partnership between Changan, Jameel Motors and the broader dealer network created a unified presence that many guests noted. For most who attended, the discussion shifted from whether Changan belongs in the market to how quickly the brand can grow to meet the interest.

LAST WORD

Changan enters South Africa at a time when Chinese brands are reshaping expectations and offering buyers more choice than ever before. The Sun City launch showcased a brand with confidence, planning and a clear product vision. The Alsvin, CS75 Pro, Hunter, Hunter REEV, and Deepal S07 each serve a distinct purpose, and together they create a lineup that is competitive and relevant.
