AT THE CUTTING EDGE

PORSCHE 911 EDITION 50Y PORSCHE DESIGN

Porsche celebrated 50 years of Porsche Design with an exclusive 911 named in honour of the milestone. Based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS and limited to a run of 750 vehicles, the special edition car has many features and details that pay homage to the iconic designs of Ferdinand Alexander (F.A.) Porsche.

The motto “good design must be honest” is attributed to F.A. Porsche, the legendary designer responsible for the original Porsche 911, and the man who founded the Porsche design studio in 1972. Today, Managing Director Roland Heiler and his team still follow that philosophy. They design carefully thought-out, functional, and durable products with a purist aesthetic using authentic materials. As the in-house design team of the Porsche Design brand, their inspiring, high-quality products include watches, sunglasses, luggage, and leather goods.

Porsche Design is as much part of the Porsche brand as the iconic 911 itself. To celebrate the studio’s 50th anniversary in 2022, Porsche released a limited-run 911 tribute based on the Targa 4 GTS.

Paying homage to the early designs created by Porsche Design and the iconic motoring brand itself, the special edition Targa echoes numerous details inspired by the iconic designs of F.A. Porsche. Released alongside the car is a special version of the new edition of the legendary Chronograph I from Porsche Design.

THE EXTERIOR

The 911 Porsche Design 50th Anniversary Edition was released in Black or, optionally, in Jet Black Metallic – an apparent reference to Porsche Design. “Black was the colour of the first Porsche Design product, the Chronograph I. That’s why we chose it for our limited-edition model. Using Platinum as an accent colour elevates the black paintwork in the same way chrome details used to,” says Roland Heiler, Managing Director and Chief Designer at Design Studio F.A. Porsche in Zell am See, Germany.

The Targa bar is painted in satin finish platinum, while the ‘Porsche Design’ decorative film on the doors also comes in this contrasting colour. The limited-edition model has the same wheels as the 911 Turbo S: 20” at the front and 21”, which also boast the satin finish platinum, while the hub covers display coloured Porsche crests. The brake callipers are painted in high-gloss black, as are the main features of the standard Sport Design package. The special edition also features an exclusive ‘Porsche Design 50th Anniversary Edition’ badge on the slats of the rear lid grille. The ‘911’ logo on the rear apron is black as well.

THE INTERIOR

Perhaps the most notable and iconic interior feature is the Sport-Tex chequered seat inlays with unique black leather segments and contrasting seams in Slate Grey. The typically usable and supremely comfortable 18-way electrically adjustable Adaptive Sports Seats Plus come as standard as the Sport Chrono Package with the Porsche Design Subsecond clock on the dashboard. The clock takes a bow to the Chronograph I from 1972 with the small second hand in red.

The leather-bound GT sports steering wheel has the 12 o’clock marking in Slate Grey – the same colour as the seat belts, while the headrests are embossed with the ‘Porsche Design 50th Anniversary’ logo, which can also be found on the black, brushed aluminium door entry guards.

Other notable features include a Silver ‘911’ badge with a limited edition number on the dashboard and the ‘F.A. Porsche’ signature.

SPORTINESS OF THE 911 TARGA 4 GTS

Since the launch of the 992 in 2019, the GTS models have been an attractive addition to the 911 range. The turbocharged three-litre, flat-six engine delivers 353 kW while the maximum available torque is 570 Nm. Although a seven-speed manual gearbox with a shorter gear lever and very short shift action was available to order when the car was released in 2022, our test unit was fitted with Porsche’s exceptionally direct eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK).

The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system is a defining characteristic of the 911 Targa 4 GTS, while the high-performance brakes are the same as in the 911 Turbo.

The standard sports exhaust system ensures an even more emotional sound experience thanks to particular GTS tuning and the omission of some interior insulation.

LAST WORD

The Targa is an absolute gem of a car and ranks as one of my personal all-time favourite Porsches. Although a limited-run contemporary classic, the 911 50Y Anniversary Edition is the classic epitome of the design icon, and a worthy representative of Porsche Design as a driving force in creative motoring design expression.
