HomeLEISURE DRIVEREFINED POWER MEETS COASTAL CHARM

REFINED POWER MEETS COASTAL CHARM

A LUXE WEST COAST DISCOVERY

There’s something undeniably satisfying about heading up the west coast on a cloudy day. The dramatic sky casts haunting shadows across the bonnet of the Discovery Dynamic HSE, its turbocharged diesel engine purring like it knows exactly where you’re headed – Yzerfontein. A little fishing town on the Cape West Coast, a peaceful slice of quiet charm begging you to discover its many hidden gems, just over an hour from Cape Town, but the journey is half the pleasure when you’re behind the wheel of a machine this refined.

The Land Rover Discovery Dynamic HSE is one of those vehicles that blurs the line between opulent luxury and robust capability. It flaunts an undeniable presence. Clad in gleaming Santorini Black with 21″ gloss dark grey wheels, this isn’t your average school-run SUV – although, of course, it could handle that with complete ease and graceful style too, particularly considering its seven-seater passenger capabilities (a perfect chariot for an entire netball team if you must!). The air suspension and All Wheel Drive system make it feel like you’re floating on a cloud even as you tackle uneven roads or the occasional gravel patch on the way to the coastline.

A DIESEL POWERHOUSE WITH FINESSE

Under the bonnet lies a 3.0-litre six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine, pushing out roughly 258 kW and a very satisfying 700 Nm of torque. It’s the kind of torque you don’t just read about – you feel it. Merging onto the R27 West Coast Road, a gentle nudge on the throttle sends the 2.4-tonne beast forward with elegance and muscle. There’s no drama, no turbo lag – just seamless, linear acceleration. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is intuitive, rarely needing manual intervention, though the paddle shifters are there if you feel the urge to take control.

Despite its size, the Discovery holds corners with composure, especially considering its off-road capabilities. The AWD system monitors and adjusts traction in real time, and while we mainly stayed on tar, there was a detour or two that showed just how capable this vehicle is when the road gets rough, or your journey leads you to explore and discover more sandy terrains.

YZERFONTEIN’S WILD BEAUTY

The road to Yzerfontein is one you don’t rush, especially in something as comfortable as this. With the Meridian Sound System filling the cabin with a mix of well-known roadtripping tunes and coastal breeze (yes, the sunroof was wide open), the kilometres ticked by effortlessly. The town reveals itself slowly, with whitewashed houses scattered along a rugged coastline and a deep, blue Atlantic horizon stretching endlessly ahead.

Our first discovery? Strandkombuis. Tucked away among the dunes, this rustic beachside venue, adjoining a genuinely unique and beautiful nature reserve, is where you let your feet touch the sand and your mind slow down. The Discovery easily handled the gravel and sandy path down to the venue, the Terrain Response system set to “Sand” mode, making short work of the loose stuff. There’s something special about pulling up to a place where the ocean is your soundtrack and your shoes are optional.

Strandkombuis feels like it belongs to another time – rustic wooden benches, fire-grilled seafood, the salty smell of the sea infused with the aroma of “roosterbrood” baking on an open fire lingers in the air. It’s not glamorous in the traditional sense, but it doesn’t need to be. This off-the-beaten-track gem offers more than just a place to stay – it delivers an experience. From cozy accommodations and a restaurant rich in local flavour to event spaces perfect for unforgettable weddings and celebrations, it’s not just a destination; It’s a place to reconnect with the coast, with friends, and even with yourself.

FROM TARMAC TO TZATZIKI

After a breezy beach walk, it was time to head home. We then discovered another tucked-away gem on the outskirts of Yzerfontein – That Greek Place. Family and pet-friendly, it serves up authentic Greek and Mediterranean fare, with recipes passed down from Greek grandmothers.

Run by Calli, a chef from Limnos with years of Greek kitchen experience, the mezze feast – dolmades, halloumi, calamari, and melt-in-your-mouth lamb kleftiko – was unforgettable. The setting is relaxed, with garden nooks perfect for summer, and a cozy interior for cooler days.

The vibe is casual and welcoming. Outside, the Discovery drew its share of admiring glances – a rugged touch of luxury in a sleepy coastal town. A perfect pairing for a lazy lunch and a West Coast sundowner.

BOUNDLESS LUXURY

Driving back, windows down and the golden-hour light stretching its well-manicured fingertips through the cloud-studded horizon, it was hard not to reflect on how perfectly the Discovery suits a road trip like this. It’s luxurious without being showy, powerful without being overly aggressive, and tech-savvy without feeling clinical. Whether you’re navigating the West Coast’s long open stretches, negotiating pothole-ridden detours, or just cruising through a quaint seaside fishing village, the Discovery Dynamic HSE feels right at home.

Fitted with the Comfort Pack, which includes a solar-attenuating windscreen, front centre console refrigerator compartment, four-zone Climate Control, and cabin Air Purification Plus, the Discovery offers endless capabilities and dynamic performance. Add to that a vast array of advanced safety systems and thoughtful convenience features like remote boot release, a powered inner boot lid, and keyless entry, and you have a vehicle designed not just to move, but to elevate every journey. The only downside? Eventually, you have to return to the city. But if you do it in the Discovery Dynamic HSE, one of the world’s most versatile SUVs, you’ll be taking the long way home, longing to discover more.
