THE POISE BEFORE THE TEMPEST

DISCOVERY D350 TEMPEST

Driving the Discovery Tempest at dawn feels fitting for a vehicle that belongs out on the open road. The name Tempest suggests power and unpredictable conditions, while Ingenium speaks to ingenuity. Before the city begins to stir and the day finds its own rhythm, those qualities move beyond carefully chosen descriptors to reveal themselves in the character of the vehicle itself.

Powered by Land Rover’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder Ingenium turbocharged diesel, producing 257 kW and 700 Nm of torque, the Discovery D350 is capable of propelling itself from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, which is an impressive figure for a substantial seven-seater weighing more than 2.3 tonnes. Remarkably though, from the driver’s seat, the performance feels measured rather than aggressively theatrical. Power builds smoothly, the automatic transmission is unobtrusive, and the Discovery gathers speed effortlessly.

Finished in Carpathian Grey with a matte protective film, the test vehicle boasted a Petra Copper contrast roof and 22″ diamond-turned gloss black wheels with copper-tinted lacquer. It has magnetic road presence, but the design remains restrained.

You know you are driving something substantial the minute you settle into the luxurious elevated driving position. Despite its considerable dimensions, the Tempest is remarkably easy to place, aided by its 3D Surround Camera, parking aids and Wade sensing.

EARNED LUXURY

Inside, the sumptuous embrace of Caraway Windsor leather unfolds beneath a softly luminous Light Oyster headlining, while Shadow Aluminium accents add a touch of contemporary refinement. Every detail feels immaculately considered, creating a cabin that is as inviting as it is sophisticated. Yet its true luxury lies in the harmony of luxurious materials, elegant textures and intuitive design.

Housed within the cabin, the head-up display, 11.4″ Pivi Pro touchscreen, Meridian Surround Sound, wireless charging and four-zone climate control create an atmosphere of quiet indulgence. But it is the 20-way electric driver’s seat, with memory, massage and a captain’s armrest, that becomes the most desired companion as the kilometres unfold. It is the kind of luxury you barely notice at first. That is until the gentle massage, perfect driving position and effortless support become so instinctive, almost addictive, that driving without them suddenly feels unthinkable.

CRAFTED FOR THE JOURNEY

The seven-seat configuration gives the Tempest a practical side that its luxury credentials might initially disguise, offering a genuinely useful family-sized SUV. The third row is electrically adjustable, the rear seats fold electrically, and 172 litres of space remains behind the third row. With the rear seats neatly folded, the loadspace opens up considerably, offering up to 1,997 litres behind the first row.

Another thoughtful touch in our test vehicle was the selection of luxury pet accessories, including a portable shower for rinsing muddy or sandy paws, a ramp, and a feeding bowl, to name a few. Small details, perhaps, but they reflect a premium SUV designed for everyday life, and for owners whose weekends extend well beyond the city.

BEYOND THE TARMAC

The Advanced Off-Road Pack elevates the Tempest into a league of its own. The test vehicle was equipped with a twin-speed transfer box, Terrain Response 2, Configurable Terrain Response, All Terrain Progress Control and an active rear locking differential.

In off-road height, ground clearance increases to 285 mm, with a maximum wading depth of 900 mm. The Discovery can also tow up to 3,500 kg braked.

There is no need to seek out an extreme trail to appreciate the Discovery’s capability. It is enough to know that when the road becomes loose, wet, steep, or simply disappears altogether, the engineering is more than capable of meeting whatever the terrain demands.

LAST WORD

By the time the morning makes its grand entry, the Tempest has already revealed its character. It is fast without feeling frantic, luxurious without becoming precious, and effortlessly capable. Whether carrying family, luggage and dogs, escaping for the weekend, or simply leaving the tarmac behind, it remains powerful, composed and remarkably easy to live with.

Perhaps that is what makes the name significant. At dawn, when the day is still finding its direction, the Tempest gives you the confidence to find yours.
