When I told my wife we were getting another GWM Tank 300, she barely looked up from her phone. “Again?” came the reply, fair enough, considering how much I’ve spoken about this vehicle since we tested the petrol version. But this one was different. The diesel. The real deal.
The new GWM Tank 300 2.4T brings proper muscle to the popular Tank 300 mix. Under the bonnet sits a 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine, quietly producing 135 kW and a solid 480 Nm of torque. With its nine-speed automatic gearbox, the drive feels smooth yet capable, whether you’re cruising through the city or venturing off-road. It’s got a three-tonne towing capacity, which means it can handle heavy trailers, boats, or anything else adventurous life throws your way.
OFF-ROAD SWAGGER
The Tank 300 Diesel isn’t here to play it safe. It comes ready for the rough stuff, with the hardware to back up the rugged looks. Electronic diff locks, Tank Turn capability, seven driving modes, all fitted as standard. It’s been built to conquer rocky trails, muddy slopes, and even those less glamorous Joburg potholes. I had it tackling gravel, Pretoria portholes, and everything in between. The Tank soaked it all up without breaking a sweat. My only real challenge? Convincing my wife this wasn’t “just the same car again.”
In the cabin, the rugged, military-inspired exterior quickly gives way to unexpected luxury. Nappa leather seats welcome you, complete with heating, cooling, and even massage functions. A heated steering wheel and double-glazed glass take care of the rest, making the cabin a peaceful escape from the chaos outside. With twin 12.3″ screens, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an impressive sound system, it’s got all the comforts and tech of an urban SUV, just wrapped in an off-road-ready body. Even the kids gave it a thumbs-up… at least until the usual snack-time arguments broke out.

SAFE AND CAPABLE
GWM didn’t hold back on the safety front either. The Tank 300 Diesel boasts a five-star ANCAP safety rating, along with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and more. It gives you peace of mind whether you’re crawling through a rocky trail or merging onto the highway.

LAST WORD
After a week of living with the diesel Tank 300, I can confidently say this is the complete package. It’s rugged, refined, surprisingly fuel-efficient, and has enough character to turn heads wherever you go. My wife still rolls her eyes when I say “Tank 300,” but deep down, I know she gets it now. It’s not just another SUV, it’s the right formula, finally done properly.
