Growing up, I wanted an Audi. In my head, it was red, parked neatly in the driveway, wearing those four rings that always seemed to carry style, performance and quiet confidence. That dream has not yet made it into my garage, but the privilege of driving various Audi models over the years has kept it alive.
This time, the keys belonged to the Audi SQ5 TFSI 260 kW Black Edition, finished in Ultra Blue Metallic and handed to me for seven days. It was not a launch route or a quick media drive, but a full week of meetings, errands, family duties, traffic and those ordinary moments that quickly reveal whether a car truly fits into real life.
THE RING LEADER ARRIVES
Ultra Blue Metallic may not have been the red Audi of my childhood imagination, but it made a strong case for itself. In the sun, it looked rich. In traffic, it stood out. Paired with the Black Edition treatment, black mirrors, and 21″ 5 V-spoke offset-style wheels, it had a stance that felt confident without trying too hard.
That confidence followed me through the week. Each time I walked towards the SQ5, there was still a small pause before getting in. Some cars impress you on collection day and quickly become part of the background. This one kept its presence, whether parked outside a meeting, at home or in a busy parking lot.
SEVEN DAYS, REAL LIFE
A full week with a car tells a better story than a carefully planned route. The SQ5 had to fit into my normal rhythm, and that is when it started to make sense. In town, it felt calm and easy to place. The steering was light enough for daily use, the ride felt composed, and the adaptive air suspension sport helped take the edge off imperfect roads.
Inside, the cabin carried that familiar Audi confidence. It felt clean, solid, and properly put together, with nothing trying too hard for attention. The electric seats with memory made it easy to settle in, the panoramic glass sunroof opened up the cabin nicely, and the rear USB charging port became one of those small things in family life that you quickly come to appreciate.
The comfort key, Audi phone box, storage and luggage package, and park assist package all added to the ease of living with it. With 510 litres of luggage space, expanding to 1,510 litres, the SQ5 also handled the normal bags, clutter, and weekly running around without fuss. It may carry an S badge, but it never forgets that it is also an SUV.
WHEN THE ROAD OPENS UP
The SQ5 does calm very well, but it does not take much to remind you what sits beneath the bonnet. The 2,995 cc TFSI engine produces 260 kW and 500 Nm, paired with an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission and quattro All Wheel Drive. On paper, it runs from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h
On the road, the numbers translate into effortless pace. You do not need to force the experience. A firm press of the accelerator is enough, and the SQ5 responds with a clean, confident surge. It feels quick, planted and mature, rather than loud or theatrical.
That is where the ring leader’s name started to feel right. It leads through balance, not drama. It can sit quietly in traffic, carry the family and handle daily duties, then change character when the road opens up. It gives you performance without making every drive feel like a performance event.

THE PACKAGE
At R1,541,000, the Audi SQ5 TFSI 260 kW Black Edition sits firmly in serious territory, and importantly, this example does not climb beyond that with options. What you see here is effectively the finished product, complete with Ultra Blue Metallic paint, black styling package with black mirrors, panoramic glass sunroof, trailer hitch, Matrix LEDs, comfort key, rear USB charging, Audi phone box, electric seats with memory, 21″ black wheels, adaptive air suspension sport, park assist package and the storage and luggage package.
And that is the point. It arrives feeling complete. There is no sense of ticking boxes to make it feel special, it already is.
And yes, in a country where fuel pricing is always part of the conversation, this is one of those cars where it fades into the background. You are not buying an SQ5 to chase economy figures, you are buying it for the way it delivers its power, its composure and that quiet confidence Audi does so well.

LAST WORD
After seven days with the Audi SQ5 TFSI quattro Black Edition, what stayed with me was not only the performance. It was the way it moved between different parts of life without fuss. One moment, it was a calm premium SUV; the next, it reminded me that 260 kW was waiting under my right foot. It also felt personal. I may not yet own the red Audi I once pictured, but spending a week with this Ultra Blue Metallic SQ5 reminded me why the dream started in the first place. Some cars impress you quickly and fade into routine. The SQ5 grew on me with every drive.
