There are road trips, and then there are journeys that linger long after the luggage is unpacked. Our recent escape from Cape Town in the striking Volvo XC90 T8 AWD Plug-in Hybrid Ultra Dark was precisely that – a fusion of effortless performance, supreme comfort, and soul-stirring scenery that perfectly complemented the timeless beauty of the Overberg.
The XC90, Volvo’s flagship seven-seater, has long been an icon of safety and Scandinavian design. In its latest iteration, the T8 plug-in hybrid elevates the formula with a refined 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a potent electric motor. Total system output reaches 340 kW, along with exceptional torque of 709 Nm, delivering swift yet composed acceleration (zero to 100 km/h in around five seconds) and the confidence of permanent all-wheel drive. With an 18.8 kWh battery offering a real-world electric range of 50-70 km, we glided silently out of Cape Town on pure electric power for the initial stages, emissions-free and whisper-quiet.
THROUGH THE HEART OF THE OVERBERG
We chose the scenic route via Sir Lowry’s Pass towards Caledon and then on to Napier and Bredasdorp, one of South Africa’s most breathtaking drives. The XC90’s adaptive air suspension (monitoring road conditions 500 times per second) transformed twisting cliffside corners and undulating country roads into a magic-carpet ride. The Ultra Dark’s sleek, contemporary styling with its confident lines turned heads in the small villages along the way, while the cabin’s exceptional insulation kept wind and road noise to a minimum. Inside, the renewed minimalist dashboard, premium recycled materials, and larger high-resolution touchscreen created an atmosphere of modern luxury.
We cruised in pure electric mode through the historical towns that define the Overberg, and on the open road, the Bowers & Wilkins audio system filled the cabin with crystal-clear sound as the wheat fields spread out before us.
After a relaxed drive of roughly four hours, we arrived at the Arniston Spa Hotel, a jewel on the southern Cape coast. This historic fishing village, with its iconic whitewashed thatched cottages and turquoise waters, felt like stepping into another era. Our sea-view room overlooked the harbour, where traditional boats bobbed gently. The hotel’s spa, warm hospitality, and superb dining provided the perfect unwind after the road. Mornings began with fresh coffee on the balcony as the sun rose over the ocean – pure tranquillity that mirrored the calm confidence of the XC90.
COMFORT AND CAPABILITY
From Arniston, we ventured deeper into the Overberg to De Mond Villa in the De Hoop Nature Reserve. The XC90 tackled the lesser-travelled gravel and secondary roads with poise. In Hybrid mode, the seamless transition between electric and petrol power ensured effortless progress, while the raised air suspension handled rougher sections comfortably.
De Mond Villa proved extraordinary – a private, luxurious five-bedroom sanctuary with sweeping views over the vlei and fynbos. Its elegant décor, private swimming pool, braai area, and direct access to the reserve created an exclusive bush-meets-beach experience. We spent two days immersed in nature: spotting zebras and bontebok on game drives, birdwatching (the reserve is a paradise for twitchers), and hiking sections of the famous Whale Trail. Evenings were spent in the boma under star-filled skies, the silence broken only by the distant call of wildlife.
The XC90’s practical cabin swallowed our luggage, cooler boxes, and hiking gear without complaint, while its thoughtful storage solutions kept everything organised. Throughout the trip, the XC90 T8 embodied Volvo’s philosophy of safety and serenity. Advanced driver assistance systems provided subtle support on unfamiliar roads, while the legendary seating comfort ensured we arrived refreshed rather than fatigued. The plug-in hybrid system proved ideal for South Africa’s mix of highway, coastal, and gravel roads – silent electric running in towns, powerful hybrid boost when overtaking, and efficient long-distance cruising.

This journey highlighted why the XC90 remains a benchmark. From the dramatic curves of Sir Lowry’s Pass to the pristine wilderness of De Hoop and the timeless charm of Arniston, the Volvo delivered an experience defined by effortless luxury, environmental consideration, and pure driving pleasure.
As we returned to Cape Town, it became clear that this was more than a road trip. It was a reminder that the best journeys combine extraordinary vehicles with unforgettable destinations. The Volvo XC90 T8 Ultra Dark didn’t just get us there; it elevated the entire adventure.
