The launch of the new GAC Emzoom Nova had a slightly different feel from the usual motoring media day. Instead of a lifestyle estate or hotel setting, GAC Motor South Africa took us to Wits University, with the presentation hosted inside the Dome.
The Wits University Dome gave the morning of the GAC Emzoom Nova launch a younger, more energetic backdrop, which worked well for a compact SUV aimed at buyers who want design, technology and value in one package. After the presentation, we took a short drive from Wits to Emmarentia Dam for a quick photo opportunity before returning to campus.
The drive was brief, so this was never going to be a full road test. It was, however, enough to get a first impression of the latest addition to the Emzoom range.
The Emzoom itself is already familiar in South Africa, having launched locally in 2024. Until now, the range has included the Executive and R-Style derivatives, with the new Nova joining as a more value-focused model at R359,900.
The price is important because it places the Nova in a busy compact SUV segment where buyers are looking closely at what they get for their money. GAC seems to understand this well, giving the Nova a strong mix of styling, technology, warranty confidence and turbocharged performance.
It keeps the brand’s sharp “Star Diamond Shadow” design language, with a bold front grille, geometric lines, LED daytime running lights and hidden door handles. The new 17-inch alloy wheels also suit the car’s youthful look, while available colours include Fast Red, Graphene Grey, Moonlight Grey, Star Silver, Solid White and Galaxy Lilac.
In person, the Emzoom Nova still has presence. It looks modern and slightly dramatic, without feeling completely overdone.
SHORT DRIVE, CLEAR IMPRESSION
Under the bonnet is GAC’s third-generation 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 130 kW and 270 Nm. Power goes to the front wheels through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, with GAC claiming a 0 to 100 km/h time of 8.0 seconds and fuel consumption of 6.2 l/100 km.
On the short route to Emmarentia Dam and back, the Emzoom Nova felt comfortable enough in city conditions. The steering was light, the ride felt settled, and at normal speeds, it moved with the easy character expected from a modern compact SUV.
When I put my foot flat, there was a slight tug through the steering as the car gathered pace. It was not alarming, but you could feel the front wheels working to put the power down.
Then again, it may have been my size 12 shoes getting a little too excited on the accelerator that day.
VALUE IN THE CABIN
Inside, the Nova keeps things practical and well-equipped. The cabin features a synthetic leather-and-fabric seat combination, a 10.25” HD touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, remote start via the key fob, keyless entry, cruise control, an electronic parking brake, and a multifunction steering wheel.
There is also ample passenger space and a versatile cargo area, which will matter to buyers looking for a single car that can handle daily use and weekend plans.
Safety and ownership confidence add to the appeal. The Nova is built on GAC’s Mega Chassis, with a 58.9% high-strength steel body structure and a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating. Standard safety features include rear parking sensors and Hill-start Hold Control. On the downside, the Emzoom Nova carries only two front airbags, and in a segment where, increasingly, at least four are offered as standard, with as many as six in competitors such as the Suzuki Fronx.
GAC does, however includes a lifetime engine warranty for the first owner and a two-year/30,000 km service plan.
At R359,900, the Emzoom Nova makes its strongest argument. It brings bold styling, a turbocharged engine, useful technology and a confidence-building warranty package at a price that should get attention.
This is where the Nova becomes interesting. It may not feel perfect when pushed hard, but as a value-focused compact SUV with good looks and generous features, it has a clear role in the Emzoom family.
LAST WORD
The GAC Emzoom Nova adds a more accessible entry point to the Emzoom range. It looks the part, comes well-equipped, has strong pricing, but the absence of additional airbags is unfortunate. Finally, the lag under hard acceleration is noticeable, but at R359,900, the value story remains difficult to ignore.
