The year has barely begun, and UD Trucks Southern Africa has already set the tone for what lies ahead. Hosted at Zwartkops Raceway in Gauteng, the brand’s first engagement of 2026 was positioned as a media briefing rather than a traditional launch, reflecting a focus on clarity and direction. The session unpacked 2025 performance, outlined strategic priorities for the year ahead and introduced product updates under the global theme, Drive Further, For Better. In a transport industry shaped by economic pressure, fuel volatility and infrastructure challenges, the message was deliberate and measured: stability is engineered.
Despite a demanding operating environment, UD Trucks Southern Africa closed 2025 with resilient results. The brand achieved an overall new vehicle market share of 8%, including a strong 10.8% share in the heavy-duty segment. Aggregate industry sales rose to 31,652 units, up slightly from 31,190 units in 2024, a modest increase numerically, but a meaningful one given prevailing conditions. The aftermarket business also delivered solid growth, with Service Agreement uptake now at approximately 50%, reinforcing a long-term commitment to uptime, predictability and operational efficiency.
“While the operating environment remains challenging, our performance shows that customers trust UD Trucks to deliver reliable solutions that support their businesses,” said Filip Van den Heede, Managing Director of UD Trucks Southern Africa. “Our focus remains clear, to drive further for better by offering innovative products, strong retail partnerships and solutions that make a real difference to customer operations.”
STRATEGY BACKED BY EXPERIENCE
The strategy was reinforced through a ride-and-drive session around Zwartkops Raceway, allowing media to sample the UD Quon and UD Quester in real-world conditions. Zwartkops is familiar territory, but typically experienced in light motor vehicles. Stepping into the UD Quester immediately shifts the mindset. The scale, weight and responsibility are impossible to ignore. It felt less like an invitation to push limits and more like a reminder of purpose. Here is an open track, drive it, but be responsible. That sense of restraint reflects how these trucks are engineered, not to impress on a racetrack, but to perform safely and consistently in daily operations.
THE QUON BENCHMARK
The UD Quon remains the flagship of the range and continues to define the brand’s long-haul offering. Engineered for demanding heavy-duty applications, Quon blends advanced technology, productivity-focused design, and a strong emphasis on uptime to support customers operating under sustained commercial pressure. “The Quon represents the pinnacle of UD innovation, from performance and safety through to driver comfort and connectivity,” said Van den Heede. “It is engineered for customers who demand more from their vehicles.”

QUESTER BUILT AROUND THE BUSINESS
Alongside it, the UD Quester reinforced its role as a cornerstone of the brand’s success across global growth markets. First launched in 2013, Quester has built a reputation for efficiency, durability, and versatility across long-haul, construction, general cargo, and waste applications. For 2026, updates are guided by customer insight, focusing on fuel efficiency, safety, driver comfort and total cost of ownership. Enhancements include the ESCOT Direct Drive gearbox, a four-stage retarder, UD Stability Control, a driver airbag and a refreshed cab interior designed around usability and comfort.
“Quester is more than a truck; it is a business partner,” said Esaia Taunyane, Sales Director at UD Trucks Southern Africa. “Every feature is guided by customer feedback, helping customers reduce the total cost of ownership and strengthen long-term returns.”
CONNECTED INTELLIGENCE AT WORK
Beyond the trucks themselves, UD Trucks highlighted how digital tools are becoming central to fleet performance. Enhanced features within the My UD Fleet telematics platform emphasise data-driven decision-making, with customised dashboards that allow operators to track key performance indicators over time. Trend charts, visual analytics and heat maps for driving behaviour provide greater visibility over fuel efficiency, driver habits, and operational patterns, supporting proactive intervention.
UD Trucks also previewed the upcoming UD Dash Camera system, combining road-facing and driver-facing cameras to monitor unsafe following distances, lane departures, driver fatigue, distraction and phone use. Positioned as a coaching and risk-reduction tool rather than a surveillance tool, the system aims to improve safety standards while reducing downtime associated with incidents.
UPTIME AS STRATEGY
Uptime continues to anchor the brand’s value proposition. Through proactive maintenance planning, predictive servicing, connected services and a growing dealer network, UD Trucks Southern Africa focuses on reducing unplanned downtime and protecting productivity. Recent dealer investments reinforce the importance of strong retail partnerships in delivering consistent customer support.
LAST WORD
The first engagement of the year often sets the tone, and UD Trucks Southern Africa has chosen confidence over noise. In an industry defined by uncertainty, the brand’s approach remains grounded in execution. Stable growth, customer focus and uptime are not slogans here; they are strategy.
