Ford South Africa launched the new Territory Dark Edition with a family-style media drive that was anything but ordinary. No stiff briefings or boardroom chats, this was a hands-on, kid-approved experience that brought the SUV to life in the most relatable way: with a fun-filled road trip from Lanseria Airport to Gold Reef City, complete with popcorn, thrill rides, and a back seat full of opinions.
Generally, South African new vehicle launches follow a pretty standard formula that’s information-heavy and geared towards experiencing the car fully in a short space of time. When Ford added the 1.8T Dark Edition to the Territory range last month, that all went out the window in favour of a fun day out with the family.
For our family, the experience felt like picking up where we had left off. Since we already have the Territory Titanium long-term model in our garage, stepping into the Dark Edition felt familiar yet exciting. We deliberately chose the same Ruby Red colour as our Titanium to see just how distinct the changes are, and they are, in all the best ways.

STRIKING STYLE FOR EVERYDAY HEROES
The Dark Edition is all about presence. It does not shout, but it certainly speaks. From the satin black grille to the glossy black 19″ alloy wheels and subtle roof accents, there is an immediate sense of bold sophistication. Whether parked at the theme park gates or idling at the robot, this version of the Territory stands out effortlessly.
With our own Titanium as a direct comparison, it was easy to appreciate the visual uplift. The exclusive black “Territory” badging at the rear, the roof rails, and the high-gloss black trim pieces give the Dark Edition a noticeably more athletic look, without losing the refined family feel.
FUNCTION MEETS FINESSE
Step inside, and the charcoal black headliner and pillars immediately set the mood. The seats are upholstered in black perforated leather with eye-catching Cyber Orange stitching, adding contrast without being loud. Compared to the light-toned feel of the Titanium, this cabin feels more cocooned, modern, and mature.
The layout remains familiar, which is a good thing. The 12.3″ digital instrument cluster and the 12.3″ infotainment screendominate the dash, backed by wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and intuitive controls. It remains a tech-forward SUV, albeit with a darker, sharper aesthetic.
SMOOTH, STEADY, AND REFINED
Under the bonnet, the 1.8L EcoBoost engine continues to deliver the kind of drive we have come to enjoy from our Titanium. Paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, it offers smooth gear shifts and balanced performance, whether cruising along the freeway or negotiating inner-city traffic.
Selectable drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sport, and Mountain, return, and we played around with them during the trip. As before, Normal mode handled most situations with ease, but Sport brought a bit more responsiveness, making the open road to Gold Reef City a touch more enjoyable.
SAFETY THAT MAKES SENSE
What also remains reassuringly consistent is the safety suite. From the Blind Spot Information System and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, to Lane Keep Assist and the newly added 360-degree camera, everything works smoothly in the background, helping the driver stay aware and confident, especially when distractions from the back seat happen.
The camera, in particular, is a great addition, offering excellent clarity when parking in tight spots or navigating Gold Reef City’s busy entrance loop.
PASSED WITH FLYING COLOURS
The real test for the Dark Edition was how it handled a real family day out. And once again, the Territory nameplate came through with flying colours. The boothandled everything from jackets and snacks to theme park swag with space to spare. USB ports kept devices charged, while the upgraded interior gave mum and dad a sense of calm that lasted well beyond the coffee break.
And for the kids? “It’s like Red Velvet got cooler,” was one verdict from the back seat and that pretty much sums it up.
LAST WORD
For families who already love the Ford Territory, the Dark Editionbrings a refreshing edge without changing the fundamentals. It is stylish, spacious, tech-loaded, and now, a little bit more grown-up.
The familiar comfort remains, but the aesthetic upgrades deliver a dose of excitement that makes getting back in the driver’s seat feel brand new.
As far as launch events go, this one ticked all the boxes. The Territory Dark Edition handled every kilometre with ease, and the Gold Reef City experience made it a day to remember. Ford South Africa continues to speak directly to real families, and we’re here for it.
