OMODA C5 1.5T SHS HYBRID

The OMODA C5 has not taken long to become one of the brand’s most recognisable models in South Africa. From the original petrol-powered C5 to the more expressive X Series, it has built its appeal around sharp styling, generous specification and a price position that has drawn attention.

Now the range takes its next step with the C5 SHS Hybrid. Launched at Langhams Lifestyle Estate on the outskirts of Fourways, the new model keeps the familiar C5 attitude but adds a different kind of promise – less time watching the fuel gauge and more confidence between fill-ups.
This is not a plug-in hybrid, and that is an important part of the story. The C5 SHS is OMODA’s first conventional hybrid electric vehicle in South Africa, meaning you do not need to charge it, you simply drive, while the petrol engine and electric motor work together in the background.

A HYBRID WITH NUMBERS TO BACK IT

The C5 SHS pairs a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 165 kW and 295 Nm. Power goes to the front wheels through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, designed to keep the experience smooth and efficient.
On the launch route from Langhams, which mixed suburban roads, open sections, and varied surfaces, the C5 SHS felt easy to understand. It is not trying to turn hybrid driving into a science lesson. The petrol and electric systems work together quietly, giving the car a relaxed feel in normal driving and enough response when you ask for more.
OMODA claims a zero to 100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds, with a WLTP fuel consumption figure of 4.9 L/100 km. The bigger headline, however, is range. With a 51-litre fuel tank and 1.83 kWh LFP battery, the C5 SHS is said to offer more than 1,000 km on a single tank.
That figure gives the car its strongest talking point. Not because everyone will drive it gently enough to match the claim, but because it speaks directly to how people think about running costs.

INSIDE THE SHS

The C5 SHS retains the bold exterior character of the range, but small details help it stand apart. It rides on 18” alloy wheels with red-painted brake callipers, while automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, roof rails and a sunroof enhance its visual and lifestyle appeal.
Inside, the cabin has also been given its own identity. Compared with the standard C5 X Series, the SHS has a cleaner, more symmetrical dashboard layout and a bridge-style centre console, giving the front area a more settled and practical feel.
The specification is generous, which has become part of OMODA’s local pitch. Standard features include dual 12.3” screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, a 50 W wireless phone charger, dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, black leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, an eight-speaker Sony sound system and multi-colour ambient lighting.
Boot space starts at 372 litres and expands to 1,072 litres with the 60/40 split rear seats folded, while a power-operated tailgate adds everyday convenience.
Safety has been given proper attention, with seven airbags, Isofix child seat anchorages, electronic stability control, electronic brake-force distribution, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist.
The C5 SHS launched at R469,900 for the first month, before moving to its official price of R479,900. The package includes a five-year/75,000 km service plan, a five-year/150,000 km factory warranty, and a 10-year/one-million km engine warranty, all linked to the first owner.

LAST WORD

The OMODA C5 SHS Hybrid feels like a smart next chapter for the C5 range.
It brings hybrid efficiency, strong specification and useful everyday range into a familiar package. More distance, fewer fuel stops, and no plug required.
