CHANGAN HUNTER REEV LEADS A NEW EV ERA

Changan’s entry into South Africa comes with structure already in place. Backed by local partner Jameel Motors, the brand arrives with a defined dealer network, parts support, and a clear product strategy. At the centre of that introduction is the Hunter REEV, a range-extended electric bakkie designed to bridge the gap between electrification and everyday usability.

Changan Automobile’s entry into South Africa comes with scale already established. The Chinese manufacturer has produced more than 30 million vehicles globally and operates in over 75 markets. Locally, the brand is represented by Jameel Motors, which has confirmed a national dealer rollout supported by a dedicated parts warehouse and a structured aftersales programme. This is not a limited trial or soft market test. It is a formal introduction backed by infrastructure and a long-term plan.

That context matters when assessing the first products arriving on local soil. The Hunter REEV, in particular, is not positioned as a halo model or technology demonstrator. Instead, it reflects how Changan intends to approach electrification in South Africa, incrementally, with an emphasis on usability rather than rapid disruption.

A GLOBAL MANUFACTURER WITH RECENT MOMENTUM

Changan’s background is defined by steady expansion rather than sudden emergence. The company traces its origins back more than 160 years and operates multiple global research and development centres. In December 2025, it became the first independent Chinese automaker to exceed 30 million vehicles produced. While the first 20 million units were built over several decades, the most recent 10 million were completed in just four years, reflecting a sharp acceleration in output.

That growth coincides with increased investment in new-energy vehicles, intelligent platforms, and export markets. South Africa now forms part of that expansion. Importantly, the brand’s local arrival aligns with its broader global shift rather than sitting outside it. The Hunter REEV and Deepal S07 are products already in production elsewhere, adapted and introduced here with clear intent.

HUNTER REEV

Electrification Eithout Dependency

The Changan Hunter REEV is marketed as the world’s first range-extended electric bakkie. Its layout differs fundamentally from conventional hybrids. Propulsion is handled entirely by electric motors, while a petrol engine functions solely as a generator to recharge the battery when required. There is no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels.

The system combines a 31.2 kWh battery with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol generator, delivering a combined output of around 200 kW and 470 Nm. In pure electric operation, the Hunter REEV can travel approximately 130 to 145 km, depending on conditions. When the generator is engaged, total driving range extends beyond 1,000 km.

For South African conditions, that configuration is relevant. Charging infrastructure remains inconsistent outside major metropolitan areas, and bakkies are often required to cover long distances or operate in remote environments. The Hunter REEV allows electric driving in urban use while retaining the range flexibility expected of a working vehicle.

BAKKIE FUNDAMENTALS REMAIN INTACT

Dimensionally, the Hunter REEV aligns with established double-cab competitors. Overall length measures roughly 5,380 mm, width is just under 2,000 mm, and ground clearance sits at approximately 220 mm. The wheelbase measures 2,180 mm. Payload capacity is close to 1,000 kg, while towing capacity is rated at up to 2,200 kg.

Four-wheel drive is standard, and the chassis is engineered to handle both load and terrain demands. Changan has been careful not to reposition the Hunter as a lifestyle-focused alternative. It remains a bakkie first, with electrification integrated into the drivetrain rather than dictating the vehicle’s identity.

Interior specification reflects current segment expectations. A 12.3″ infotainment screen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while features such as wireless charging, built-in Wi-Fi, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a 540-degree camera system are included. Vehicle-to-load capability allows the battery to power external equipment, a feature with clear practical applications in work and leisure scenarios.

Local pricing for the Hunter REEV starts at around R799,900, with a five-year/150,000 km warranty and extended coverage for high-voltage components.

DEEPAL S07

A Conventional EV Approach

While the Hunter REEV addresses infrastructure limitations, the Deepal S07 represents Changan’s fully electric direction. Deepal operates as the group’s dedicated EV sub-brand, with a focus on battery-electric platforms, digital interfaces, and design-led execution.

The Deepal S07 is positioned as a mid-size electric SUV. In South African specification, it is equipped with an 80 kWh battery and a single rear-mounted electric motor producing approximately 160 kW and 320 Nm. Claimed driving range is up to 560 km, placing it among the more usable EV options currently available locally.

Charging performance supports DC fast charging, with a 30 to 80% recharge achievable in around 35 minutes under optimal conditions. That capability makes longer-distance travel more feasible, provided access to compatible charging infrastructure.

SPECIFICATION-LED POSITIONING

The S07’s interior places emphasis on technology and refinement rather than minimalism. A 15.6″ central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, supported by a comprehensive driver-assistance suite that includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a full camera system. Ride quality is managed via an independent suspension layout, tuned for comfort over uneven surfaces.

Warranty coverage mirrors the Hunter’s structure, with a five-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty. Local pricing starts just below the R1 million mark, positioning the S07 against both premium internal combustion SUVs and emerging electric competitors.

MARKET RELEVANCE

Changan’s South African strategy reflects a clear understanding of current market conditions. Rather than committing entirely to battery-electric vehicles, the brand offers a mix of solutions that accommodate varying levels of infrastructure readiness and consumer confidence.

The Hunter REEV provides an entry point into electrified driving without removing conventional range security. The Deepal S07 caters to buyers ready to commit fully to electric mobility. Both vehicles are supported by a dealer and parts network designed to address ownership concerns that often accompany new brand entries.

LAST WORD

Changan’s arrival is defined by preparation rather than spectacle. The Hunter REEV and Deepal S07 illustrate two sides of the same strategy, one transitional, one fully electric, both grounded in practical application rather than theory.

For the South African market, that approach feels considered. Not every buyer is ready for full electrification, and not every use case supports it. By introducing products that acknowledge those realities, Changan positions itself as a long-term participant rather than a short-term disruptor.
