QUIET POWER, DARKER INTENT

VOLVO XC60 T8 PHEV AWD ULTRA DARK

This would be only the second Volvo I have ever driven, and what a way to receive it. The XC60 T8 Plug-In Hybrid AWD Ultra Dark arrived with a quiet kind of confidence, dressed in darker exterior detailing and carrying itself with the calm assurance on which Volvo has built its name.

It was not a quick launch route or a few kilometres behind the wheel. It had to fit into my normal week, the school run, errands, family duties, traffic, meetings and the usual running around that comes with being a family man. That is where a car either becomes a companion or simply another test unit.
The XC60 quickly leaned towards the former. It looked premium on the driveway, felt composed in daily use and carried enough surprise under the bonnet to make me look at the Volvo badge differently.

DARK SUIT, CLEAN LINES

The Ultra Dark treatment suits the XC60 well. It gives the car a sharper edge without turning it into something loud or overstyled. The refreshed design brings a cleaner front end, Volvo’s updated iron mark badge, darker rear lights and new wheel designs, while the T8 Ultra rides on 20″ alloy wheels as standard.
There is something appealing about a vehicle that does not beg for attention. At the school gate, outside a meeting or parked at soccer practice, the XC60 looked smart, mature and expensive without trying too hard.
That restraint is part of its charm. The darker detailing adds presence, but the overall design remains calm and elegant. It is still very much a Volvo, just with a little more attitude.

REAL LIFE, REAL SUV

A few days with a car in your own routine can tell you far more than a short, polished drive ever could. The XC60 had to deal with the ordinary things, school bags, grocery stops, family movement, traffic, parking lots and the small everyday moments that quickly reveal whether a vehicle is genuinely easy to live with.
In that space, the Volvo made a strong case for itself. The cabin felt spacious enough for family use, the boot was practical, and the power-operated tailgate became one of those small conveniences you appreciate when your hands are full.
The cabin also has a calming effect. The design is clean, the materials feel premium, and nothing inside feels like it is shouting for attention. Volvo’s reputation for excellent seats also makes sense here. They are comfortable, supportive and easy to settle into, whether you are doing a quick school drop or spending more time on the highway.
The XC60 seats five across two rows, and as a family SUV, it feels properly considered. It is not only about space. It is about how easy it makes the daily rhythm feel.

WHEN THE POWER ARRIVES

The calm character is only one side of the story. The T8 badge is where things become properly interesting.
The XC60 T8 Plug-In Hybrid AWD uses a Twin Engine setup, combining a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. Together, they produce 340 kW and 709 Nm, sent through an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels.
That gives the XC60 T8 a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of just 4.8 seconds, and on the road, that figure feels believable. The power is surprisingly shocking. One moment, you are doing calm family duties, the next, a firm press of the accelerator reminds you that this is a very quick SUV.
It delivers its performance without noise or theatre. It simply gathers pace with smooth, clean urgency. The All Wheel Drive system helps it feel planted, and the delivery is so refined that the speed can catch you off guard.
I love cars loud, and I love them with drama too, but the XC60 T8 made its point differently. It quietly shocked me, and somehow that made the experience even more memorable. Now I understand why Volvos are so highly rated. This car made me look at the brand differently, and yes, I would easily put it among the top cars I have driven to date.

THE PLUG-IN HYBRID SWEET SPOT

The plug-in hybrid setup is one of the XC60’s strongest cards. Its 19 kWh battery offers up to 81 km of pure electric range, while Volvo claims fuel consumption as low as 1.8 L/100 km when used properly.
As with any plug-in hybrid, the real benefit depends on how you charge. If you can charge at home or at work, the XC60 starts to make a lot of sense. School runs, short commutes, shopping trips and daily errands can be handled quietly on electric power, while the petrol engine remains ready for longer journeys.
That flexibility matters in South Africa. Full-electric vehicles are growing in popularity, but charging access and long-distance planning remain part of the conversation. The XC60 T8 gives you a useful middle ground. You get electric calm when it suits your life, but without the range anxiety that can come with going fully electric.
For a family schedule, that balance feels right.

COMFORT, TECH AND CALM

Inside, the updated XC60 feels modern without becoming complicated. The larger 11.2″ free-standing touchscreen comes with Google built in, while the 12.3″ driver display keeps key information clear and easy to read.
Connectivity includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB Type-C ports, a wireless phone charger and over-the-air updates. The system is powered by the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, which makes it faster and more responsive than before.
The T8 Ultra also comes standard with the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system, and in a quiet cabin, that makes a big difference. Whether it is your own playlist after school drop-off or the family soundtrack on the weekend, the system adds to the premium feel.
Volvo has also worked on refinement, with laminated windows and air suspension helping the XC60 feel quieter and more settled. Advanced air purification adds another layer to that clean, calm cabin feeling.

You cannot speak about Volvo without speaking about safety. In the XC60 T8 Ultra, that safety story is backed by a strong list of systems, including Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, front collision mitigation support, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, rear collision warning and mitigation, a 360-degree camera, park assist front, rear and side, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control.
There are also passive safety features such as multiple airbags, Side Impact Protection System, inflatable curtain airbags, whiplash protection for the front seats and Isofix anchorages for the outer rear seats. For me, this is where the Volvo badge carries real meaning. When you are carrying your children, safety is never optional. The XC60 gives you that solid, protective feeling without making the technology feel intrusive.

THE PACKAGE

The XC60 T8 sits firmly in premium SUV territory. In Ultra Dark form, it feels like a complete offering rather than a model trying to justify itself with a single headline feature.
The T8 Ultra is priced at R1,500,700, while the T8 PHEV Plus comes in at R1,460,800. All variants are sold with a five-year/100,000 km warranty and a five-year/100,000 km service plan. On the T8 PHEV models, the hybrid battery is covered for 8 years/160,000 km, and 5 years of unlimited roadside assistance are also included.
At this level, buyers expect comfort, technology, safety and performance to come together properly. The XC60 T8 manages that well. It feels quick without being aggressive, premium without being flashy, and practical without losing its sense of occasion.
That is what makes the package convincing. It is not trying to be everything to everyone. It is a family SUV with real performance, plug-in-hybrid flexibility and a calm, confident personality.

LAST WORD

The Volvo XC60 T8 Plug-In Hybrid AWD Ultra Dark left a stronger impression than I expected.
It is quick, refined, safe, practical and quietly stylish, but what stood out most was how naturally it fitted into family life while still having serious performance waiting in reserve.
Swedish-made, now locally loved by yours truly.
