Over a recent weekend, I spent two days with the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC Coupé, culminating in a breakfast run to Aroma Coffee Roasters in Hazelwood, the central hub of Pretoria’s local car scene, where the latest AMGs wre on display to the envy of local motoring enthusiasts.
It was a crisp mid-winter morning when I headed to Mercedes-Benz’s Advanced Driving Academy at Zwartkops Raceway, where invited media were introduced to the near-complete range of AMG models available locally. The plan was that each journo would receive a designated AMG for the weekend, and after detailed presentations on the vehicles, and a light breakfast, I took delivery of the CLE 53 in Spectral Blue over a Balao brown Nappa leather interior and 20” AMG Y-spoke black wheels.
The CLE 53 is the standout of the Mercedes CLE Coupé range. Yes, the other models in the range (CLE 200 and CLE 300) deliver understated refinement, the CLE 53 elevates the experience with an undeniable presence and precise detailing. Its low, sweeping roofline, sculpted sides, and AMG-specific grille immediately identify it as a performance-focused coupé. The black Y-spoke wheels add subtle aggression without compromising elegance, and the rich tan interior brings warmth and sophistication to the cabin. Time spent behind the wheel confirmed that this is a car that draws attention without any need for exaggeration.

ENGINE AND DYNAMICS
Power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system, producing maximum shove of 347 kW (from 5,800 to 6,100 rpm) and a beastly 600 Nm of torque from a low 2,200 rpm. The zero to 100 km/h sprint takes just 4.2 seconds, while the AMG 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system ensures traction is precise and predictable. Even on Gauteng’s questionable roads, the CLE 53 feels composed and balanced. The adaptive suspension absorbs imperfections in Comfort mode yet sharpens responses in Sport or Sport+ settings. The exhaust note is assertive without being intrusive, offering a soundtrack that underscores every push of the throttle and complements the coupé’s fluid acceleration.

SETTLING IN
Having the CLE 53 for the weekend allowed me to settle into its character. At this level, Mercedes products are known for how well steering communicates the road clearly, adding undeniable confidence to a drive that is already thrilling. The chassis remains composed through corners, and the ride never feels harsh despite 20-inchers.
Inside, the cabin is a quiet (and properly ensconcing) retreat, allowing the engine’s growl and subtle hum of the hybrid assist system to be appreciated when desired. Acceleration feels smooth yet instant, the torque readily available across the rev range, and transitions between Comfort and Sport modes reveal just how versatile this coupé can be.
On Sunday morning, the weekend reached its social highlight at Aroma Coffee Roastery in Hazelwood. This is a gathering spot for car enthusiasts, and the CLE 53 – adding a touch of class to the lineup of AMG that also included the track-focused GT 63 and raucous SL 63 – blended proudly into the scene while drawing its share of admiring glances.
After a curated breakfast, I departed in the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+. That drive will be covered in a follow-up article, but the CLE 53’s balance of poise and performance remained firmly in mind.

LAST WORD
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC Coupé beautifully balances assertiveness with refinement. It represents the peak of the CLE range, offering power, elegance, and driving engagement in a single package. Even over a short weekend, its performance credentials are undeniable, without sacrificing comfort or style.
On the road or standing still, the CLE 53 leaves an impression. The combination of design, presence, and driving dynamics ensures it rewards every minute behind the wheel.
