BYD has expanded its local footprint by launching three new models – the Shark, Sealion 6, and Sealion 7 – each bringing a distinct combination of hybrid or electric drivetrains, high-tech features, and innovative design to an increasingly competitive local landscape. With these additions, BYD’s local offering now spans six vehicles, signalling a clear intent to compete across multiple vehicle segments.
The world’s largest maker of electric cars, BYD, has introduced a trio of new energy vehicles to the South African market – the Shark plug-in hybrid bakkie, along with the Sealion 6 and Sealion 7 family SUVs – strengthening its presence after a slow start in South Africa. The move builds on the brand’s recent momentum, where it already offers the Atto 3 crossover, the Dolphin hatchback, and the sporty Seal sedan.
While the Sealion 6 and 7 cater for the growing SUV market with a focus on plug-in hybrid and full-electric drivetrains, what will pique interest in our market most is the Shark – a double-cab bakkie with an electrified edge. It also marks BYD’s first foray into the country’s high-volume leisure double-cab segment, a space currently dominated by Toyota, Isuzu, and Ford.
ELECTRIFIED DUAL STRATEGY
With these new models, BYD effectively completes its dual-track strategy in South Africa, offering plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) across key market segments. The company now counts six models in its local portfolio, making it one of the more prolific EV brands operating in the country.
Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto SA, said the launch reflects the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility. “With this launch, we are offering South African consumers a new level of performance, efficiency, and smart mobility solutions,” he noted at the official unveiling.

BYD SHARK 6
As the brand’s first hybrid bakkie in South Africa, the BYD 6 Shark rides on what the company calls its DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform. It blends a rear-wheel-biased drivetrain with BYD’s Electric Hybrid System (EHS) and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine to produce a combined output of more than 320 kW. That’s roughly on par with the outputs of large-displacement V8s, and the Shark claims a zero to 100 km/h sprint time of just 5.7 seconds.
Notably, the dual-energy setup allows for 85 km of electric-only driving range – more than enough for a typical commute – and up to 670 km of combined range under WLTP testing. Once the battery is depleted, average fuel consumption climbs to a reported 9.6 l/100 km, which is competitive for a bakkie of this size and performance.
Structurally, the Shark’s battery pack plays a dual role: It powers the electric motors and is integrated into the frame via Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) construction. This enhances torsional rigidity by 22%, and along with high-strength steel construction, it promises improved stability and occupant protection.
Local pricing starts at R899,900 for the flagship Shark 6 GL, which is positioned to compete with top-end bakkie offerings from established rivals, albeit with a novel electrified twist.

BYD SEALION 6
Positioned as a midsize family SUV, the BYD Sealion 6 arrives in two flavours: front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD). Both versions use the brand’s DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) hybrid system, offering a flexible solution for buyers not yet ready to commit to full electrification.
The FWD model prioritises fuel efficiency and long range, with a 1,080 km total claimed range and economy figures as low as 5.5 l/100 km. The AWD version adds more muscle, delivering 238 kW and 550 Nm, and dropping the zero to 100 km/h time to 5.9 seconds.
Technology is a focal point here, too. A 15.6-inch rotating infotainment screen dominates the dash, with a head-up display and intelligent voice control. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assistance, and a 360-degree camera system are all standard, supporting BYD’s pitch for the Sealion 6 as a compelling long-distance and urban solution.
Prices for the Sealion 6 range from R769,900 for the front-wheel-drive model to R829,900 for the all-wheel-drive version.

BYD SEALION 7
At the top of the pyramid sits the all-electric Sealion 7, a sporty coupe-style SUV built to compete with premium EV offerings from brands such as Tesla and Kia. It also becomes BYD’s fourth fully electric model in South Africa, after the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal sedan.
Two versions are offered: the Performance edition (390 kW, zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds) and the Premium edition (230 kW, zero to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds), with a top speed of 215 km/h. Range is pegged at 482 km (WLTP) from an 82.5 kWh Blade Battery, and ultra-fast DC charging (up to 150 kW) allows for 2zero to 80% top-ups in just 30 minutes.
Beyond the numbers, the Sealion 7 offers high-end comfort and versatility. A 500-litre boot (plus a 58-litre front trunk), Dynaudio sound system with 12 speakers, and a luxurious cabin built using Cell-to-Body (CTB) structural design aim to push the boundaries of what buyers can expect from Chinese premium EVs.
It’s also one of the first models locally to come standard with a 7 kW wallbox charger and a 2.2 kW portable charger, which will go some way to lowering the barrier of entry for EV adoption.
The Sealion 7 Premium is priced at R999,900, while the high-performance variant commands R1,099,900.

LAST WORD
While BYD’s products are technologically impressive and competitively priced, widespread adoption of plug-in and battery EVs in South Africa remains hampered by infrastructure challenges and consumer caution. Nevertheless, the brand’s local expansion – with eight dealerships already established – signals its long-term intent.
As BYD edges deeper into the South African mainstream, its diversified line-up offers buyers tangible alternatives to the internal combustion status quo. Whether the local appetite matches the brand’s ambition remains to be seen.
