HYUNDAI ALCAZAR

In a market where complexity is often mistaken for progress, Hyundai South Africa’s approach with the new Alcazar is refreshingly restrained. Introduced last month as the successor to the Grand Creta, the Alcazar quietly but confidently reaffirms the brand’s commitment to no-nonsense, family-focused motoring – and does so while giving the wallet a welcome breather.

The local launch event of the new Hyundai Alcazar mirrored the car’s character – straightforward, effective, and free from unnecessary theatrics. Hyundai SA has this formula down to an art – a reflection, perhaps, of the cars they build. Like the Alcazar itself, what you see is what you get – and, more importantly, what you get is everything you need.

MORE EVOLUTION THAN REINVENTION

Replacing the Grand Creta was always going to be a case of measured evolution rather than dramatic change. The Alcazar, with its slightly longer body and revised styling, ticks that box. The front-end design now echoes elements of Hyundai’s larger SUV family – most notably the bold H-motif LED lighting reminiscent of the new Santa Fe, which is launching locally this month. The rear lighting signature has also been reworked, and while it won’t turn as many heads as some of its bolder siblings, it conveys a sense of visual continuity that many buyers will appreciate.

In the cabin, the layout is familiar, but practical touches abound. A dual-screen display setup aligns the infotainment and digital instrument cluster with current expectations, while USB ports are available across all three rows and features like wireless charging, ventilated front seats (in the Elite), and a panoramic sunroof add a touch of big-SUV luxury to the equation. Fold-out tables in the second row (again, Elite only) hint at Hyundai’s awareness of how families actually use their vehicles.

TRIMMED DOWN AND BETTER FOR IT

Where Hyundai deserves credit is in rationalising the model lineup. The previous Grand Creta spanned five variants; the Alcazar boils that down to just three. This decision not only simplifies the buying process but, in the case of the 2.0 Executive AT, results in something rarely seen these days: a price drop. At R66,600 less than its predecessor, this model now includes an electronic parking brake and Drive Mode Select – proof that value doesn’t have to mean compromise.

Power comes from a choice of two engines: a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol (117 kW/191 Nm) or a 1.5-litre turbodiesel (84 kW/250 Nm), both mated to Hyundai’s familiar six-speed automatic gearbox. In typical Hyundai fashion, the Alcazar doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Performance is adequate – and that’s precisely the point. Overtaking at highway speeds requires a bit of patience, but fuel consumption on the open road remained respectable during our drive. Drive Mode Select adds a useful layer of responsiveness when needed, and while you won’t be setting any lap records, you’ll get the family where they need to go in comfort and safety.

ALWAYS FUNCTION FIRST

Third-row packaging remains a challenge in most mid-size seven-seaters, but Hyundai has done a commendable job here. The rearmost seats offer reasonable space for short trips and come with their own air vents and charging ports – features too often overlooked in this segment. When not in use, both rear rows fold flat to free up a generous luggage area.

Standard safety kit is comprehensive, with six airbags, ESC, and ISOFIX mounting points across the range. The Elite model also features advanced assistance systems, including Blind Spot Detection, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control, further expanding its appeal to tech-savvy families.

LAST WORD

The Hyundai Alcazar doesn’t shout for attention, but it doesn’t need to. It slots into the brand’s local SUV line-up with purpose, sensibly replacing the Grand Creta and subtly improving on the formula. It’s stylish, not flashy, purposeful, not fast – but for many families looking for space, value, and straightforward quality, it might be just about perfect.
