The meandering route from Noordhoek to Muizenberg is more than just a scenic stretch along Cape Town’s iconic coastline – it’s a road that tests spirit, style, and performance. And on a crisp Cape morning, behind the wheel of the all-new Mazda CX-60, with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell crooning through the sound system, this SUV proved that it was made to conquer more than just a route rich in texture, it conquers emotion in a display of poise and power.
The Mazda CX-60’s 3.3-litre inline-six turbodiesel engine, paired with its electric mild-hybrid system, hums to life effortlessly. Delivering up to 241 kW and 500 Nm, it is torquey but refined, confident without needing to shout. You don’t feel the turbo spool, nor the hybrid assist kick in; everything just flows.
AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH
En route via the M64 to Noordhoek, the climb up Ou Kaapse Weg pass is steep, winding past Silvermine Nature Reserve, but the CX-60 doesn’t flinch. Here, the Mazda’s dynamic chassis control shines. Switchbacks are met with composed body control, the steering precise and well-weighted. The rear-biased all-wheel-drive system engages smartly, offering grip without drama.
With a 48V mild-hybrid boost and all-wheel drive, the SUV holds its line through every bend like it’s dancing to the Motown rhythm playing through the 12-speaker Bose sound system. Acceleration is brisk, with a zero to 100 km/h time under six seconds, but it’s the way the CX-60 delivers its power that impresses. Confident, but never aggressive. Mature, yet athletic. You feel the elevation, the cool air rushing in as the vehicle surges forward. Ain’t no mountain high enough, indeed.

AIN’T NO VALLEY LOW ENOUGH
Descending into the lush valley towards Noordhoek, the CX-60 reveals its second nature – comfort. The interior is a blend of Japanese craftsmanship and modern luxury: maple wood trims, Nappa leather, and stitching that speaks of Takumi artisanship.
The drive feels less like a test and more like a glide. At low speeds, the CX-60’s ride comfort is plush, thanks to its multi-link rear suspension and solid chassis tuning. With adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist quietly working in the background, you realise the Mazda CX-60 doesn’t just drive, it anticipates. Whether you’re coasting past lush equestrian estates, through narrow forest lanes, aided by the CX-60’s 360° camera system, or navigating suburban stop-start traffic, there’s no valley low enough to unsettle it.
There’s no mistaking the CX-60’s intent. It’s Mazda’s most premium SUV to date, and it boasts the looks to prove it. The Kodo design language has matured, as evidenced by the long bonnet, rear-drive proportions, and sharp shoulder lines. Parked outside the artisanal shops in Noordhoek Village, it drew its fair share of attention. Over lunch at Limoncello, the SUV sits nearby like a sculpture, the Rhodium White paint shimmering in the afternoon sun, highlighting the interplay of light and form in a way few SUVs manage. It’s the sort of vehicle you’re proud to park in full view.

AIN’T NO RIVER WIDE ENOUGH
Post-lunch, before heading back down Ou Kaapse Weg, at the summit, we pause to take in Muizenberg’s turquoise coastline unfolding below. The wind pushes against the bodywork, but inside, it’s silent. Just Marvin singing: “No wind, no rain, or winter’s cold… can stop me, baby.”
Descending into Muizenberg and looping back along the coast toward the N2 back to Cape Town, the CX-60 cruises effortlessly. The cabin tech keeps pace: 12.3-inch digital cluster, heads-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay, and adaptive cruise control all working in sync.
With surfers lining up in glassy waves and the ocean breeze pouring through the panoramic sunroof, the final leg of the journey feels symbolic. From high passes to gentle valleys and coast-hugging roads, the Mazda CX-60 has bridged it all – power, luxury, tech, and emotion – a car made for both the open road and the connected world.

TO KEEP ME FROM GETTING TO YOU
The Mazda CX-60 sings a song of capability and class. Like Marvin expresses it, “If you need me, call me”, and that’s precisely the energy this SUV exudes. There’s nowhere it won’t go for you, no terrain too challenging, no drive too daunting.
For luxury-seeking drivers who want more soul in their SUV, yet demand no compromise in comfort, technology, and dynamics, the six-cylinder CX-60 makes a compelling case.
