VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER KOMBI

As someone who truly values MPVs, maybe because of my family size, every time there is a launch or an opportunity to drive a multi-purpose vehicle, my hand is the first to go up. Seven has always been my lucky number (given that we’re a family of seven), but with the new Volkswagen Transporter offering eight seats, I cannot help but think it might be time for us to finally get that dog everyone has been asking for.

Few vehicles in automotive history have a legacy as profound as the Volkswagen Kombi. Born in the 1950s, it became the blueprint for the modern family van, moving effortlessly from workhorse to lifestyle symbol. It was loved for its versatility, reliability, and its ability to turn even the most ordinary trip into an adventure.

Now, more than seven decades later, that same spirit lives on in the all-new Volkswagen Transporter. Built on a platform (shared with the Ford Tourneo Custom) at the latter’s plant in Kocaeli, Turkey, this latest generation Volksiebus benefits from the strength and engineering experience of both brands. It is larger, more efficient, more capable, and more comfortable, ensuring that the Kombi’s DNA evolves without losing its historic appeal.

THE JOURNEY NORTH

Our journey with the new Transporter began at Volkswagen’s head offices, where the brand hosted a business presentation before setting us off on an immersive drive to the Radisson Safari Hotel in Hoedspruit.

The following day took us through some of the country’s most scenic routes, including a memorable lunch stop in Graskop. The stopovers were perfectly planned, and for someone who had never been to Mpumalanga or Dullstroom before, I was genuinely taken by its charm. My driving partners made the kilometres melt away, with a playlist that instantly transported me to Ibiza.

DESIGN AND DIMENSION

Visually, the new Transporter boasts clean lines and a confident stance that are unmistakably Volkswagen. At the front, the bold grille and LED headlights bring a modern edge, while subtle design cues such as the famous Bulli line along the sides pay homage to the original Kombi.

Dimensionally, it has grown in all the right ways. The short wheelbase version measures 5,050 mm in length, with the long wheelbase stretching to 5,450 mm. The wheelbase itself extends to 3,100 mm, improving both stability and cabin space. Load capacity has increased too, with the long-wheelbase model offering up to 6.8 cubic metres of volume, enough to fit three pallets with room to spare.

The maximum payload now reaches 1.33 tonnes, while towing capacity stands at 2.8 tonnes on a braked trailer. Even the roof load has been upgraded to 170 kg, adding yet more versatility.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE

Volkswagen offers a versatile range of three 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines producing 81 kW, 110 kW, and 125 kW, respectively, for the full Transporter range. However, Kombi derivatives all use the larger engine, which delivers smooth power and generous torque, making light work of heavy loads or long climbs.

Transmission options include a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, with the higher-output engine available with 4MOTION all-wheel drive for added control and confidence. The shared platform with Ford adds extra strength and balance, making the Transporter feel composed and refined in every condition.

SMART INTERIOR SPACE

Take a glance inside, and it will be immediately apparent that the new Transporter has moved far beyond its utilitarian roots. The cabin feels modern, connected, and comfortable, with every detail designed around the driver. The dashboard is dominated by a 12″ Digital Cockpit and a 13″ infotainment touchscreen, both bright and responsive.

Standard features include LED headlights, Light Assist, multifunction steering wheel, keyless start, Lane Assist, Front Assist, rain sensor, and dynamic road sign display. Connectivity is seamless with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range.

Seating comfort has also taken a significant step forward. Depending on the model, the front seats can be manually or electrically adjusted with lumbar support, and the cabin is filled with functional storage spaces, cup holders, and charging ports. The overall feel is premium enough, trumped only by its practicality.

LAST WORD

The all-new Volkswagen Transporter is the continuation of a story that has shaped generations. It is bigger, stronger, and more intelligent, balancing practicality with comfort.

Heading back to the VW head office, I could not help but think of the December holidays ahead. Should I be offered one for the festive season, I already know how I would spend that time. It would be loaded with beach gear, loud music playing, kids laughing in the back, and maybe our new four-legged addition enjoying the ride too, courtesy of Volkswagen’s latest icon.
