In the South African market, European brands have long set the standard for premium SUVs. Now, the Omoda C9 PHEV enters with a compelling proposition. Priced at R999,000, it offers performance and luxury that rival models costing significantly more, making it a serious contender in the segment.
As if someone flicked a switch, the second quarter of 2025 saw the introduction of a myriad of electrified rides from Chinese manufacturers, almost all at virtually the same time. While this undoubtedly had more to do with attempts to beat one another to the punch, rather than some new-energy conspiracy, it has undoubtedly shifted the conversation in motoring circles to affordable electrification.
In the case of the flagship Omoda C9 PHEV, it also reminded us that premium need not break the proverbial bank.
POWER AND EFFICIENCY
Under the hood, the C9 PHEV combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric motors to produce a combined output of 440 kW and 915 Nm of torque. This powertrain propels the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds, placing it in the performance league of vehicles like the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Additionally, the 34.5 kWh battery offers an all-electric range of up to 150 km, with a total (claimed) range exceeding 1,100 km, making it suitable for both city commuting and long-distance travel.
Charging the C9 PHEV is straightforward. With a 70 kW DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 30% to 80% in approximately 25 minutes. For overnight charging at home, the battery reaches full capacity by morning, ensuring the vehicle is ready for daily use.

LUXURY INTERIOR
Inside, the C9 PHEV’s cabin is every bit as luxurious as its rivals, and then some. The Nappa leather upholstery, 12-speaker Sony sound system, and dual 12.3″ screens create an environment that feels both luxurious and contemporary. While some interior details may not match the meticulous craftsmanship of its German counterparts, the overall impression is one of quality and sophistication.
The driver’s seat is particularly noteworthy. Although it is designed for comfort and support, offering a commanding view of the road, its positioning is too high, with little scope for adjusting it downward. It’s not a deal breaker, but taller drivers might also find this irksome.
The C9 PHEV is equipped with a suite of advanced features, including adaptive cruise control, a 540-degree camera system, and a driver monitoring system. The infotainment system is generally intuitive, though some users have noted that it can be complex to navigate initially. Additionally, the driver monitoring system can be overly sensitive, alerting the driver if their gaze deviates from the road for even a moment.
The layout of the controls is intuitive, with most (besides the emergency indicator button in the roof console) within easy reach, allowing the driver to focus on the journey ahead.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
On the road, the C9 PHEV strikes a balance between comfort and composure. Steering is responsive, and the suspension smooths out most imperfections; however, the weight of the battery makes the ride feel slightly firm over rougher surfaces. Power delivery is mostly flawless, with the C9’s dedicated hybrid transmission playing a massive role in ridding the PHEV of the calibration issues that trouble other models. And yes, even without the badge recognition of a European SUV, the driving experience competes on equal footing with pricier alternatives.
And on that note, what truly sets the Omoda C9 PHEV apart is its pricing strategy. At R999,000, it offers a level of performance and luxury that competes with premium SUVs priced significantly higher. This aggressive pricing positions the C9 PHEV as a viable alternative to established brands, challenging the notion that premium quality inevitably comes at a premium price.

LAST WORD
The Omoda C9 PHEV shows how far Chinese automakers have come in producing vehicles that rival the best in the industry. With its combination of luxury, performance, and technology, it is a compelling premium SUV that doesn’t come with a premium price tag. While it may not yet carry the same brand cachet as its European competitors, and real-world reliability has yet to be proven, the C9 PHEV demonstrates that value and quality can indeed go hand in hand.
