The BAIC B30e arrives carrying more responsibility than the average new SUV. Not only does it enter one of South Africa’s most fiercely contested vehicle segments, but it is also earmarked to become part of BAIC’s local manufacturing programme at its Gqeberha facility.
The local arrival of the BAIC B30e last year endowed the car with a dual purpose. It needs to compete on styling, technology, performance and value, while also demonstrating the brand’s long-term commitment to the local market.
After spending a couple of days behind the wheel, the strongest impression wasn’t simply the generous performance or extensive equipment list. Instead, it was how naturally the B30e slotted into everyday life.
The upright, squared-off styling follows the design trend currently dominating the SUV market. It hints at genuine off-road capability without feeling overly contrived. A broad front end, high bonnet, pronounced wheel arches and chunky exterior detailing give the B30e a purposeful presence, yet it never feels cumbersome in traffic or difficult to manoeuvre through shopping centres and tight parking bays.
It also possesses enough visual identity to distinguish itself from the growing number of Chinese SUVs now competing for South African buyers.
DESIGNED FOR DAILY LIFE
The cabin makes a positive first impression. A large central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while the clean, uncluttered layout creates a modern environment that feels designed for everyday usability rather than simply showroom appeal.
The elevated driving position offers excellent outward visibility, and the seats remained comfortable throughout our time with the vehicle. Occupants up front enjoy generous space, while rear passengers benefit from sufficient legroom, making the B30e a genuinely practical family SUV.
Storage solutions are thoughtfully positioned throughout the cabin, and the rear seats fold flat to create a useful luggage area, adding welcome versatility for everything from the weekday school run to longer family holidays.
As with many modern vehicles, several functions are controlled through the touchscreen. While the system becomes easier to navigate with familiarity, a few additional physical controls would make frequently used functions quicker and less distracting to access while driving.
EFFORTLESS PERFORMANCE
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine working in conjunction with an electric motor. In the flagship all-wheel-drive model tested here, total system output stands at an impressive 301 kW and 685 Nm.
Those figures translate into brisk real-world performance. The electric assistance delivers an immediate low-speed response, making overtaking and joining faster traffic feel almost effortless.
Perhaps more impressive is how composed the drivetrain remains under normal driving conditions. Rather than constantly reminding you of its performance potential, the B30e settles into a smooth, relaxed rhythm that suits everyday commuting remarkably well.
Press harder on the accelerator and progress builds rapidly, but the emphasis remains on smooth, effortless acceleration rather than outright drama.
COMFORT COMES FIRST
Launch routes are inevitably designed to flatter a new vehicle. Spending several days with it in more typical driving conditions often reveals far more.
Around town, the B30e proved comfortable over broken road surfaces, with the suspension confidently absorbing most imperfections. Its size and weight become more noticeable through quicker direction changes, although never to the point of feeling unwieldy.
The light steering contributes to easy urban driving, while the commanding seating position inspires confidence in congested traffic. Although it is by no means a small SUV, it never feels intimidating to drive.
The hybrid system also deserves praise for how seamlessly it operates. The petrol engine and electric motor transition between them almost imperceptibly, allowing drivers to benefit from hybrid assistance without constantly monitoring energy flow displays or adjusting their driving style.
BAIC claims fuel consumption as low as 5.85 l/100 km and a potential driving range of up to 1,000 km. Naturally, real-world figures will vary according to derivative, driving conditions and individual driving style, but the combination gives the B30e genuine long-distance appeal.
GENEROUSLY EQUIPPED
Equipment levels are among the B30e’s strongest selling points. Depending on the specification, buyers can expect features including a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable seats, seat ventilation, a surround-view camera system, and an extensive suite of driver-assistance technologies.
The camera system proved particularly useful, helping compensate for the vehicle’s upright body shape and making parking in confined spaces considerably less stressful.
Some of the safety systems can feel slightly overzealous in dense urban traffic, although most settings can be adjusted to better suit individual preferences.
Earlier BAIC products largely served to establish the brand’s presence in South Africa. The B30e arrives at a time when expectations of Chinese manufacturers have evolved considerably.
Competitive pricing and generous specifications alone are no longer enough. Buyers increasingly expect polished design, refined driving manners, dependable technology and comprehensive after-sales support.
On the evidence of our test, the B30e delivers convincingly in the areas that can be assessed over a few days behind the wheel. Its longer-term success will ultimately depend on how effectively BAIC supports customers once the vehicles reach South African roads.
Local assembly in Gqeberha should further strengthen buyer confidence by reinforcing the company’s commitment to the market and improving confidence in parts supply and technical support.

A few days with the BAIC B30e revealed a spacious, powerful and generously equipped SUV that feels equally at home in everyday driving as it does during a carefully choreographed launch event.
