More than simply a road trip, the drive from Johannesburg to Abjaterskop, or more specifically Morukuru River House in the Madikwe Game Reserve, is an adventure in itself. Experiencing it from behind the wheel of the Porsche Cayenne S elevates the journey into something altogether more memorable.
Settling into the cockpit, its sculpted nose pointed north towards Pretoria before continuing via Rustenburg, I was eager to discover how this performance SUV would bridge the gap between urban sophistication and the untamed beauty of the African bush. Covering roughly 350 km, the Cayenne S proved to be the perfect travelling companion – immensely powerful, exceptionally refined and every bit as luxurious as the exclusive destination awaiting us.
Merging onto the N1 towards Pretoria, the V8’s unmistakable soundtrack hinted at the performance lying beneath the bonnet, a restrained growl ready to erupt when called upon.
The Cayenne S is powered by a comprehensively revised 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 349 kW and 600 Nm of torque, a healthy increase over its predecessor. Performance is suitably effortless, with zero to 100 km/h dispatched in just 4.7 seconds, while at motorway speeds it settles into an impressively composed and relaxed cruiser.
WHERE PERFORMANCE MEETS REFINEMENT
Porsche’s latest Driver Experience takes centre stage inside the Cayenne. The redesigned cockpit places key controls exactly where they should be, while the curved 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster and head-up display ensure vital information remains within easy view. As the N1 gave way to the N4 towards Rustenburg before the scenery gradually became more rugged, the Cayenne’s adaptive air suspension, featuring two-chamber, two-valve technology, effortlessly absorbed imperfections while remaining remarkably composed through sweeping bends.
Fuel consumption remained respectable considering the performance on offer, while the advanced air filtration system, complete with predictive recirculation and fine-dust filtering, kept the cabin fresh despite the Highveld’s summer heat and dusty conditions. The 10.9-inch passenger display also proved a welcome addition, offering entertainment without distracting the driver.
The transition from tar to gravel near Wonderboom Gate felt almost seamless. Equipped with permanent all-wheel drive and enhanced off-road modes, the Cayenne tackled the final stretch with complete confidence. Its athletic stance and available lightweight packages reinforce Porsche’s claim that this remains one of the sportiest SUVs in its class.
Arriving at Morukuru River House, nestled along the banks of the perennial Marico River, the Cayenne looked entirely at home. Its blend of understated elegance and muscular presence mirrored the lodge’s exclusive atmosphere.
Morukuru River House is an intimate three-bedroom retreat designed around personalised safari experiences. Natural timber, stone and expansive glass create a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding bushveld. Private viewing decks, an infinity pool and a traditional boma complete the setting.
The hospitality was equally memorable. From the moment we arrived, every detail was handled with genuine warmth and effortless professionalism, creating an experience that felt personal rather than prescribed.
SAFARI EXPERIENCES TO REMEMBER
Twice-daily game drives in open 4×4 vehicles delivered unforgettable wildlife encounters. Madikwe’s 75,000-hectare, malaria-free reserve, home to the Big Five, offered a constant procession of memorable sightings. We tracked lions during crisp early-morning drives as the rising sun bathed the acacia trees in golden light, watched elephants gather along the riverbanks and encountered a magnificent leopard draped across the branches of a tree. It immediately brought to mind Oom Schalk Lourens’ famous encounter with a similar leopard near Abjaterskop, not far from where we made our own sighting.
Our knowledgeable guides shared fascinating stories about Herman Charles Bosman and the inspiration behind his beloved Oom Schalk Lourens character, while expertly interpreting every aspect of the surrounding ecosystem. Every drive became as educational as it was exhilarating. The absence of day visitors, together with strict vehicle limits within the reserve, ensured each wildlife encounter felt wonderfully exclusive.
Evenings offered a different kind of magic. One of the highlights was a bush dinner atop a hill overlooking the reserve. Beneath a sky overflowing with stars, accompanied by the distant calls of lions and hyenas, we enjoyed an exceptional menu celebrating South African flavours. From perfectly prepared impala to beautifully crafted vegetarian dishes, all complemented by excellent local wines, the culinary experience matched the spectacular surroundings.
Around the crackling boma fire, conversation flowed as easily as the wine. Back at River House, our private chef continued to impress with beautifully prepared meals served wherever we preferred, whether on the deck overlooking the river or within the elegant dining room.
The Cayenne S complemented this world perfectly. Its effortless blend of performance and comfort reflected the balance between exhilarating game drives and complete relaxation. Just as the V8 delivered abundant performance whenever required, River House provided an equally effortless sense of luxury through spacious suites, king-size beds, deep bathtubs overlooking the bush and attentive service that made every stay feel uniquely personal.
LAST WORD
The return journey once again highlighted the Cayenne S’s breadth of ability. Advanced driver assistance systems, including the latest InnoDrive and Emergency Steer Assist technologies, reduced fatigue over the long drive home, while Porsche Communication Management and the beautifully crafted cabin ensured every kilometre remained engaging.
This journey demonstrated exactly what makes the Cayenne S so compelling. It is far more than a means of getting from one destination to another. It enhances the experience itself, feeling equally comfortable devouring long stretches of highway, tackling gravel roads or standing proudly outside one of South Africa’s finest safari lodges.
