Bryan Kayavhu recently spent a week behind the wheel of the latest Range Rover Sport Dynamic HSE D350. Land Rover’s understated athletic flagship has perfected the art of quiet dominance. In a sea of chrome-heavy pretenders and angular aggression, this sleek and satin-clad SUV projects premium elegance with a latent threat, like a tailored suit hiding a heavyweight punch.
In a world of automotive excess, the Range Rover Sport doesn’t need to shout. It simply arrives. There’s something about how this brute pulls up to a school drop-off or lingers in the light of an evening football practice that commands respect without begging.
Our test car, finished with the Black Exterior Pack and 22″ Style alloys, oozes premium aggression. It’s elegant, although intimidating. The Narvik Black grille and accents dial down the flash while turning up the menace. You don’t pose in a Range Rover Sport. You move with purpose.
It turned heads in places you wouldn’t expect, at school gates, on kerbsides, outside late-night takeaways. People noticed. Not because it shouted, but because it whispered authority.

LOUNGE COMFORT
Inside, it’s the automotive equivalent of business class – but with a massage. The semi-aniline leather seats up front are 20-way adjustable, heated, ventilated, and equipped with memory functions. The built-in fridge between the front seats? A life-saver for kids’ juice boxes on the move. Or a chilled bottle of sparkling water when Gauteng’s sun hits peak intensity.
There’s no bad seat in the house. The second row, with power recline and heated/ventilated options, was a hit with Bryan’s crew. The usual backseat complaints from fidgety passengers simply didn’t materialise. With the panoramic sunroof flooding the cabin in natural light and dual-zone climate control keeping tantrums at bay, this Range Rover handles family chaos with unflappable grace.
TECH THAT WORKS WITH YOU
Land Rover’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment system sits behind a crisp 13.1″ touchscreen and does away with the complexity that once plagued the brand. Everything from navigation to media and calls connects easily and works intuitively. There’s wireless charging, full smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and even a ClearSight digital rear-view mirror for improved visibility with a boot full of sports gear.
It’s all wrapped in tactile luxury – from solid metal controls to soft leather finishes, while being fuss-free even during the mid-school-run multitasking shuffle.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS
Beneath the bonnet lives a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six diesel, delivering 258 kW and a mountain-moving 700 Nm of torque (even more under overboost in Dynamic Launch Mode). The numbers say it all: zero to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds, a quietly absurd figure for a vehicle weighing over 2.4 tonnes.
On the move, the D350 blends performance with poise. There’s an effortless surge when needed and a refined, near-silent cruise that makes long hauls or urban crawls equally appealing. And it doesn’t cost the earth to run: Bryan reported fuel figures hovering just under 10 l/100 km, which, considering the size and weight, is nothing short of impressive.
FLOATING ON AIR
This Range Rover Sport is underpinned by Dynamic Air Suspension, paired with striking 22″ alloys. The result? A ride quality that blurs the line between SUV and limousine. Gravel, potholes, and uneven kerbs are all absorbed with the same serene grace. Even fully loaded with family, gear, and road-trip snacks, the Sport maintains a calm composure that lesser rivals struggle to match.
Off-road credentials remain intact, naturally. You get Terrain Response 2, hill descent control, and a wading depth of up to 900 mm. But realistically, most Sport buyers will appreciate its ability to smooth over suburban imperfections more than rock crawls in the Berg.
EVERYDAY LUXURY
What sets this SUV apart isn’t just its capability, but how seamlessly that capability is woven into everyday life. From the adaptive cruise control with steering assist to the 3D surround camera system, the Sport always works with you, not against you. Soft-close doors, deployable door handles, and keyless entry elevate the ownership experience to a level that feels almost bespoke.
This blend of form and function keeps the Range Rover Sport relevant in a fiercely competitive segment. Yes, rivals like the BMW X5 xDrive30d M Sport or Mercedes GLE 450d offer impressive tech and dynamics, but few balance power, luxury, and presence quite like this.

LAST WORD
At a touch over R2.54 million as tested, the Range Rover Sport Dynamic HSE D350 isn’t pretending to be cheap. It’s built to move families, turn heads, and eat up kilometres with aristocratic ease. It’s not about outright flash, nor does it chase performance numbers for the sake of headlines.
