MERCEDES-MAYBACH SL680 MONOGRAM SERIES

Mercedes-Benz South Africa has officially introduced the new Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series to the local market, unveiling the brand’s latest flagship roadster during a glittering launch event attended by media and invited guests.

Representing the sportiest interpretation of the Maybach philosophy to date, the newcomer combines the performance credentials of the iconic SL with the craftsmanship, exclusivity and refinement that have become synonymous with the Maybach name.

While the SL has traditionally been associated with grand touring and sporting performance, the Maybach treatment shifts the focus towards effortless luxury without sacrificing the dynamic character that has defined the model for more than seven decades. The result is a two-seat convertible that promises to be equally at home gliding along coastal roads as it is arriving outside a five-star hotel.

DESIGNED TO STAND APART

At the outset, it is clear that the Mercedes-Maybach SL has been developed to make a statement. Although it shares its basic architecture with the Mercedes-AMG SL, almost every visible surface has been reworked to establish its own identity.

The front end is dominated by a Maybach-specific chrome radiator grille featuring illuminated vertical slats and integrated MAYBACH lettering. The bonnet is equally distinctive, carrying the traditional upright Mercedes-Benz star together with a polished chrome fin running along its centreline. Depending on specification, customers can even opt for a bonnet featuring an intricate Maybach pattern applied through a painstaking manufacturing process.

Chrome detailing is used extensively throughout the exterior, adding visual elegance without becoming excessive. A bespoke front apron, unique side skirts and redesigned rear bumper further differentiate the Monogram Series from its AMG sibling, while specially developed 21″ forged alloy wheels complete the sophisticated appearance.

Mercedes-Maybach also introduces two carefully curated design concepts for the SL Monogram Series. Red Ambience combines Obsidian Black metallic with the deep, multi-layered finish of MANUFAKTUR Garnet Red metallic, creating a bold and dramatic presence. White Ambience offers a more understated interpretation by pairing Obsidian Black with the satin finish of MANUFAKTUR Opalite White Magno.

As expected, customers can further personalise their vehicles through Mercedes-Benz’s extensive MANUFAKTUR programme, allowing almost every detail to be tailored to individual tastes.

CRAFTED FOR COMFORT

Step inside, and the SL’s sporting origins give way to an environment focused almost entirely on luxury. The cabin has been transformed into a showcase of craftsmanship, with Crystal White MANUFAKTUR Exclusive Nappa leather covering virtually every visible surface, including the seats, dashboard, doors and centre console.

The bright interior creates an airy atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the darker exterior paint finishes, while newly designed comfort seats feature intricate floral quilting unique to the Maybach derivative. Galvanised seat backrests and silver chrome trim pieces further reinforce the premium ambience.

Attention to detail extends well beyond the materials themselves. Every surface has been carefully selected to create a calming environment, while the flowing dashboard design integrates Mercedes-Benz’s latest digital technology without overwhelming the occupants.

Despite being a convertible, the Maybach SL680 places significant emphasis on refinement. Its acoustically insulated soft top incorporates a subtle Maybach pattern woven into the fabric and has been engineered to minimise wind and road noise when raised. Additional insulation throughout the body structure, together with specially developed sealing systems, ensures the cabin remains remarkably quiet for an open-top sports car.

With the roof folded away, occupants can instead enjoy the soundtrack of the V8 engine without intrusive wind buffeting, thanks to carefully optimised aerodynamics.

PERFORMANCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Although comfort is the primary objective, the SL680 certainly lacks nothing in the performance department.

Power comes from a handcrafted 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine producing 430 kW and 800 Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels through Mercedes-Benz’s nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, allowing the roadster to combine effortless acceleration with reassuring levels of grip in varying conditions.

Rather than chasing outright lap times, Mercedes-Maybach has focused on delivering smooth, progressive performance. Throttle calibration, transmission mapping and steering responses have all been specifically tuned to suit the vehicle’s more relaxed character.

The suspension receives equally comprehensive revisions. Semi-active hydraulic roll stabilisation works alongside softer steel springs and bespoke damper settings to improve ride comfort while maintaining excellent body control through corners. Standard rear-axle steering enhances manoeuvrability in urban environments while increasing stability during high-speed cruising.

Further measures, including a specially developed noise-optimised exhaust system and additional sound insulation, preserve the near-silent cabin environment expected of a Maybach without completely muting the distinctive character of the V8.

The result is a car capable of covering long distances in exceptional comfort while still delivering engaging performance whenever the road begins to twist.

LAST WORD

The Mercedes-Maybach SL occupies a unique position within the luxury performance segment. Rather than competing directly with traditional sports cars, it offers something altogether different – a grand tourer that places equal emphasis on craftsmanship, exclusivity and driving enjoyment.

It is also a significant addition to the growing Maybach portfolio, joining the S-Class, EQS SUV and GLS while introducing the brand to the world of open-top motoring for the first time.

The Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series is priced from R5,127,930 and includes Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s comprehensive five-year/100,000 km service and maintenance plan, providing buyers with peace of mind to match the exclusivity of one of the most luxurious convertibles now available here.
