MG HS 1.5T DCT LUXURY

MG has been steadily rebuilding its presence in South Africa, and with products like the HS, it is easy to understand why the brand is gaining momentum. Once remembered mainly as a nostalgic British badge, MG now lives in the modern world with strong engineering backing and a straightforward value-meets-quality approach. The HS sits right in the heart of the midsize SUV segment, competing in one of the most competitive corners of the market, and it arrives with something many consumers still do not expect from a Chinese-built product – premium polish.

MG has been vocal about its ambitions, but the HS does more than talk, it also delivers. And after a week of taking on school runs, grocery grabs, football drop-offs, and life with three kids in and out the doors every morning, it proved that its strengths are not just on paper, but also in daily use.

The HS range is offered in Comfort and Luxury grades, powered by either a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, or a larger 2.0-litre unit with all-wheel drive. The 1.5T Luxury tested here produces 125 kW and 275 Nm, driving the front wheels, and it sits squarely in the sights of established rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-5, Ford Territory, Haval H6, and Chery Tiggo 7 Pro.

What makes the HS compelling is the way it stitches together comfort, build quality, and specification at a price that forces a second look. It does not arrive trying to be the budget choice. Instead, it wants to feel premium, and in many ways it succeeds.

ON THE ROAD

The HS slots into daily life very quickly. The first morning school run set the tone, with a relaxed throttle response, smooth pull-away, and a gearbox that mostly remained composed in peak Gauteng stop-start traffic. When you are juggling school bags, signing homework slips at the robot, and breaking up debates over who sat where yesterday, a calm car matters.

Later in the week, a highway run to meetings showed another side. With 125 kW and 275 Nm, the HS handles overtaking confidently, and noise levels stay well controlled even when the cabin is full of little voices comparing lunch boxes. Torque delivery may not be as robust as some of its rivals, but the HS makes up for that in ride comfort, with a clear strength in its suspension that handles bumps cleanly and keeps everyone settled.

Fuel consumption hovered around 8.3 l/100 km in real-world use, with air conditioning running and plenty of short hops. Acceptable for a family SUV this size.

LIFE ON THE INSIDE

The cabin is where the HS starts feeling like a clever buy. My kids notice quality more quickly than most adults and usually point out scratchy plastics or flimsy trim. This time, they were too busy enjoying the panoramic roof and tapping along to music via Apple CarPlay. That says something.

Soft-touch surfaces, clean fit-and-finish, twin 12.3″ displays, and supportive seats make a strong impression. The driver’s seat is comfortable even after a long afternoon of school-to-practice-to-home routes, and the layout feels intuitive, not overwhelming.

Storage space is family-friendly too, with bottle holders, centre cubby, door pockets, and enough room in the boot for sports bags, groceries, and the forgotten science project that suddenly needed “supplies”.

Standard features like heated electric front seats, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, and seven airbags make you feel like you have paid more than you have.

The HS takes on real life well. Three kids across the back seat fit comfortably, including their school shoes. The powered tailgate and full-size spare wheel are big wins for parents. Visibility is good, and parking is fuss-free with the camera system, whether squeezing into school parking or malls on a Saturday.

At R534,900 for this Luxury model, plus a seven-year/200,000 km warranty and five-year/90,000 km service plan, MG adds strong long-term value reassurance to the package.

LAST WORD

There are still buyers who hold outdated views about Chinese vehicles. The MG HS challenges that thinking convincingly. It feels solid, drives with maturity, and presents itself as a refined, capable family SUV that does not rely on gimmicks. It simply works, and it works well in the real-life chaos that is modern family logistics.

If the Cyberster is MG’s headline grabber, the HS is the evidence behind the story. For families seeking premium comfort without premium pricing, the HS deserves serious consideration. It is not trying to be the cheapest option, it is trying to be the smart one.

And after a week living with it, school run after school run, that wise choice showed itself over and over again.
